Convince me to not get a Powerbook?

My parents have offered me a laptop for university. They are prepared to spend a fair bit as I'm giving them my current rig as a family computer.

I really haven't been playing games recently. The fact is I spend most of my time doing things like msn/itunes/internet and work, and I've begin to wonder why I don't just make the transition to a Mac? I also do a lot of video editing as film-making is a hobby of mine.

The only reason I can think of for getting a Windows laptop is the power for games, but I'm not sure if I'll even play much games. What sort of performance would £1600 get me?

In either case, I won't be getting this laptop for a while. March 2007 at the earliest, and so I'm sure a lot of you will simply tell me to wait for Vista and listen to the general feedback on that.

Thoughts?

For the price of £1600, **** offer the following:

(I appreciate this means I can get better for less, but I'm using **** as a sort of benchmark here)

Intel® CentrinoT Duo Mobiltechnology; Intel® CoreT Duo 2 Prozessor T7400 (2.16 GHz, 4MB L2 Cache, 667MHz FSB)
Genuine Windows® XP Home Edition
1024MB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM
120GB SATA Hard Drive (5,400rpm)
17" UltraSharpT WUXGA display with TrueLifeT
512MB nVidia® GeForceT 7900 GTX
Integrated 8xDVD+/- RW Drive#
1 Year Euro Collect and Return Service¥

Now to me, that looks awesome, but something tells me it won't be what it's cracked up to be and the laptop version of the 7900GTX will suck.

**** removed because I think they're a competitor, but I'm sure the fact it's 4 letters gives it away.

By March the 8800 mobile chip (whatever its gonna be) will be released with vista and dx10. It will be stonking for games and you should easily be able to get a laptop with a dual core cpu, 2GB RAM and an 8800 based GPU for £1600. I can't see the point in getting a Mac as what will it do that the PC based laptop wont?

It could be pretty good, awhile back my brother got a 2gig Pentium-M with DDR2 (yes it is a P-M running DDR2) and an ATI x700 GPU laptop and it actually outperformed his desktop rig which on paper should have been 25% faster... infact it even beat my desktop rig at the time by about 5fps and my desktop rig was even faster than his...
