After reading this I've gotten a craving for lasagne. Usually to make the white sauce I'll make a roux from butter and flour, then add milk, then cheese. Can you substitute butter for veg/sunflower/olive oil? If so, will it taste as good?

You could probably just use milk and plain flour to make it. If you're adding cheese then it wouldn't need butter anyway.

I make the white sauce by heating the milk before hand with a clove studded onion and some nutmeg, then remove and just use the milk. If you don't want to use butter, just use a low fat spread. Would probably taste better than veg oil.

Women cook, men barbecue.

Yet all the worlds best chefs are men?

Yes, vegetable oil should work just fine.

I wouldnt use olive oil though as it will probably burn.

If it's burning you've got too high a temperature. You don't need it to be that hot to make a roux.

Vegetable oil works but butter tastes better.

Butter makes a huge difference to the taste. Don't compromise.
