Cooking steak

I'm about to attempt to cook some rump steak. In the past ive always managed to mess my steaks up, they usually end up with burnt oil all over them.

I'm using a griddle pan on the hob, should i whack it on full blast? how long shall i give the pan to heat up? Also should i rub the oil in the steaks before, or just put some in the pan.

Ive got a choice of either olive oil, extra virgin oil or some walnut oil

I also like mine medium to well done, so how long shall i give them, 3-4 mins each side?

Post steak cooking report:

Better than usual, although probably a bit over done, was a bit dry, I didn't drip the rested juices over them which was probably why. Noticed some burning on the pan (too much oil, or too little?)
