I have just uilt a new machine with a

A8N-SLI SE
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+
Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro CPU Cooler

now I am new to this so am not sure if i should use the function "Cool 'n' Quiet technology".

when I have enabled it I get cpu fan warnings, also in the manual it says i must select ACPI 2.0 support in the power menu, i dont seem to have this option in the bios.

so im a bit confused., please advise.

Cheers

You shouldn't need it really. All it does is lower the CPU voltage when not under load to reduce temps are prelong the life of the CPU. If you are getting errors with it, i wouldnt worry about not having it enabled. Only drops temps when idle by about 3-4deg :)

thanks
my temps are beetween 40 and 47 stock, what should I not go over if i start to overclock

Danny
Thats quite high for stock temps, my 4400 idles at 33 and is 38 under load. When overclocking 55c is what i try to stay under and 60c is the maximum i would let mine run at.

generally accepted that your should try and keep it below 50 degrees, so possibly think about getting a better heatsink and fan, either something more pricey like the themaltake big typhoon with a quiet fan or scythe ninja.

60 is the max you would want the cpu to go as it will start to cause damage around that temps.

I thought the 64 freezer pro was a good heatsink and fan?

is it the right way round?

Thats the way ive got mine mounted. Ive got a 120mm extraction fan sat right behind it as well. You sure its mounted properly/has decent contact with the cpu?

it is ment to be a decent hsf, so maybe it does need reseating. possibly try different conductive paste as well. artic silver 5 = best but other stuff like coolermaster premium is good also.

oki think that may be the problem, i just ajusted it and the lever tha secures it is loose no matter what position it is, i.e up or down.

it is a few degrees cooler now, 39c as i type this.

if i take the heat sink off i need to use some more conductive paste right?

@ stock - yes
overclocked, no. it screws with voltages and could fry the cpu when overclocked.

so realy just need top know what the lever position should be up or down, it think that is the problem, i need re-seat the heatsink.

Danny

The lever should be quite hard to push into place, but once its there, it will snap into place and hold the HSF firmly. If you can move the lever easily, then there is something wrong.

yes i can move it freely, when you install it should be in the up position then pushed down into place?

so i need to take off the heatsink, clean the bottom of it and the top of the cpu, apply thermal greese to the bottom of the heatsink and re-seat.
yes?

thanks for all the help by the way
Danny

The lever will most likely be in the down position, pointing towards the fan side of the HSF when mounting, it will then be moved 180 degrees ish, towards the back of the case until it clips into place. Yep, you'll have to clean the old thermal paste of first, then reapply some more. If you happen to have some, its worth using something like Isopropanol to clean the bottom of the HSF and cpu properly. Then apply a thin player of thermal paste evenly across the cpu.
