Cooler designed for Intel and AMD, will I need to change the TIM?

Okay, so my cooler (coolit vantage) has a square of thermal paste on the base. Fair enough. The square is about the right size to cover the top of an Intel heat spreader.

Now my AM3+ processor is physically substantially larger than equivalent Intel CPUs, and I'm wondering whether to use the cooler as is with the TIM that was applied by the manufacturers, or whether to remove the TIm and apply arctic silver instead.

My concern is that the amount of TIM that will cover an Intel CPU will not adequately cover an AMD one, as per this example:

What do you folks think? :)

My thought would be that it'd spread out under the pressure, and the CPU area itself will be covered and so you probably won't see much difference. Give it a try first. I doubt AS5 will improve temps much as it is good, but isn't the highest performing paste.

TBH i have always removed the pre applied stuff and used an aftermarket tim.
also there seems to be far to much tim when pre applied imo.

Hi and welcome to the forums. :)

Is this Coolit cooler brand new and newly purchased? If so return it for a refund and buy something else. Their coolers are awful and their customer service is abysmal. There have been loads of failures of their coolers on this forum alone and if you do a google search on them you will find countless other tales of woe. They develop leaks which then cause other components to fail. When their customer service is contacted (if they bother to reply) they basically say tough luck about your components, our warranty is for the cooler leaving the unfortunate user £100's out of pocket to replace fried boards and cpus. They really are abysmal!!

Personally I don't like Corsair, but at least if one of their coolers leak they compensate the user for other components damaged so that is where I would be looking if you really want a all-in-one cooler.

If this is new and you can return it I would do so and fit a H80i ...

If you cant return it then yes i would remove the tim and put the right amount on for your cpu.
