Cooler fan - how important is placement?

As you can see in the included images, my cooler is seated preeeetty damn tight to the RAM. The fan that comes with it has some rubber feet attached for where it fits on to the cooler. Problem? Problem is the feet only attach to one side. The way I see it, my options are...

1. Remove 8GB RAM (no thanks!)
2. Put the fan above the RAM, meaning the fan isn't perfectly aligned to all of the fins on the cooler and also if I ever want to change the RAM I have to remove the fan.
3. Put the fan on the other side, but it won't have any rubber feet between fan and fins.
4. Get a new cooler - preferrably not after all the trouble I've gone through with this one, the last thing I want to do is clean up the CPU again.
5. Hidden option (you tell me :D).

So... which option do you go for?

How likely are you to change the RAM? It may involve an extra 30seconds work to remove the fan first but I'm sure you can live with that.....
I would have the fan above the RAM even if its slightly offset

Fan on the other side would have air going the other way, unless you reversed all your case fans too but this is more hassle.
New cooler? Maybe, but again, this means you have to remove the current cooler and there is no guarantee you will find the new one easier to fit.

What's wrong with having the fan on the left hand side of the cooler pulling air through?

OTOH I note you don't have a GPU. If your case has a vent at the top, you might try a Nofan CR90.

I'd be putting an AIO in there ... put a push pull fan setup one on the outside of the case if needed but this will give you lots of room around the cpu/memory area and improve air flow in your case. but this is just what I would do as I am no a FAN ( pardon the very bad joke ) of air coolers :) also does the top of your case have a holder for fans ? if it does id put a exhaust fan up there to pull out the hot air as well.

Gone for option 2. :) Seems okay so far.

Quartz: I do have a GPU. It's actually why I'm considering getting a 3x5.25 bay fan added because the 290 I've added really messes with the general airflow. The low fan on my case is now blocked off by hard drives AND the GPU almost completely. Will probably buy the 19.99 one available on OcUK sometime if temps suck, but it seems alright at the moment.
