Hi guys,

As the title suggest, I'm after a cooler for the 4670k. I've not overclocked in years but would like to achieve 4.5ghz if possible, whats the best cooler for circa £50? Can stretch to a little more if required.

Also, anyone hook me up with a noobs guide to overclocking this chip? :D

Thanks in advance.

Add 10£ and you can get a Corsair h60v2 or if you have room for 240 rad, there is the refurbished h100 for 45£ in store.
If you are looking at air, I would try prolimatech megahalems with some good pwm fans.
I had mine with 2 Akasa apache's on slightly clocked 4770k ( 4.3 ghz ) and temps were hitting 60-65 full load.

Cheers for your input doyll.

Indeed there is but, I wasn't sure if the TC14PE was abit overkill for what I was looking to achieve? (Around 4.5ghz if poss).

That Alpenfohn does look good..now you've thrown a spanner in the works ;)

Cheers

"Overkill" is underrated. :D

* Most of the best coolers can be used for years with new builds.
* You can't really have too much cooling, but you for sure can have to little... Worst case with "too much cooling" is you unplug the fans. :D
* Bigger is most often also quieter.. more cooling ability means less air has to be moved means slower fan speed means quieter.

Matterhorn is way better than 212 and for the few quid extra well worth the difference.

Don't confuse Haswell with Sandy Bridge, whilst you could usually OC a 2700K to 4.5Ghz with something like a 212 EVO with no issues it's not safe to assume you can do the same with a 4670K. Haswell's run hot and 4.5Ghz can be a struggle for some chips so you shouldn't skimp on your cooling.

Thanks for the heads up! I went with the aforementioned cooler in the end (Alpenfohn Matterhorn Pure). Would 4.5ghz be achievable with this? I know it comes down to the kind of chip I have too.

As long as you have decent airflow in your case you I think you should be fine with the Matterhorn, it does look like it can have RAM clearance issues though.

Crap, I don't think it will clear my RAM actually. Looks like I'll have to send I back, and I'm back to square one!

Doh!

Edit: actually, it might clear it. Will just have to see!

Me again.

Apologies if this is a basic question, but what's the best way to see if the cooler will clear my RAM without properly fitting it, if that makes sense.

Obviously if it doesn't fit I'll need to return it, just wondering if there's an easy way to do this. Just rest it on the CPU without the mounting gear?

Cheers

Yes, just set it on CPU and make sure the RAM is not touching fins.

Also check the fan will clear when setting on top of RAM. Although you can mount fan pulling air through cooler too. Works fine that way. ;)

Measure how tall ram is above motherboard. Matterhorn bottom fin is about 46-47mm above motherboard.

Edit:
Patriot Memory Viper 3 measures 133mm long and 7.6mm thick with a height of 41mm. Add approx 3mm for socket height and end up with 44mm. You should be fine.

By this do you mean mount the fan on the other side? That did cross my mind but wasn't sure if it would effect the cooling potential. Good to know that this is another option.

Cheers!
