Cooler for 4930k without blocking RAM slots?

On Friday I put together a new PC for work - it's a 4930K in a P9X79 LE board with 64GB Corsair Vengeance RAM (8 x 8GB sticks). I was hoping that the Silverstone AR02 cooler would be sufficient as the CPU will never be overclocked, but after firing it up just before I had to leave, the temperatures said the little cooler isn't up to it (60C in BIOS, 50C at desktop idle, mid 70C's when installing drivers, and 90-95C after 10 seconds of Prime95).

Currently I am hoping I have done something very stupid - did I leave the shipping plastic under the heatsink base, have I not tightened it up fully? I'll check these tomorrow, but assuming it's not just stupidity on my part, can anyone suggest a cooler that:

- Fits 2011 sockets (obviously!)
- Sufficiently cools a 4930K at stock
- Doesn't block any RAM slots, or fits over a Corsair Vengeance stick
- Is air cooled (boss is of a mindset that water + electricity is asking for trouble at some point)
- Is cheap

Any suggestions anyone?

Make sure you haven't left the plastic on however it doesn't look like you have because the computer usually overheats straight away if this is the case.

Did you remember to use thermal paste? (Could happen)

Try taking it off cleaning off the thermal paste (if applied) and put some more on an re-seat it.

Thanks for the suggestions - I'm planning to check the plastic and re-seat tomorrow. Definitely used thermal paste (small pea sized amount of stuff included with cooler - it was all I had to hand).

Thanks for the suggestion Stulid.

Good news - checked this morning, and I'm a TOOL!! :) Took the cooler off and peeking out from under the TIM is the plastic "remove this before use" cover. Cleaned TIM, removed sticker, re-TIMed and installed. BIOS now shows 32C and Windows idle showed the same. Will nip back to it at lunchtime and check it under Prime, but it's looking good.

Very glad the issue was with me being an idiot - much cheaper and quicker to fix than other solutions. :D

Let the ribbing commence....

That's good news at least it's not a hardware problem. I know loads of people who have done this so you are not the first. They should not make the plastic clear it should be red of something.

Just for the sake of anyone ever searching for "4930K" and "Silverstone AR-02" in future, now it's fitted properly I'm getting:

Windows idle - 30C to 35C (each core is obviously a little different)
Windows light use (installing Windows updates) - 35C to 39C
Prime95 - 70C to 80C

Very happy with those temps, but I definitely would be looking for something beefier if I was overclocking.

Glad you got it sorted.

Any half decent aftermarket cooler is better than stock cooler.. and AR02 is definitely at least that. ;)

On a 2500k (95w) AR02 is 51c, stock cooler is 79c
4930k is 130w and will be hotter but AR02 should still be able do the job nicely.

If you want an amazing cooler go for the h100i it is quiet and very very good at cooling

The most amazing thing about the H100 is how many people buy it.

H100 is not as quiet as top air, does not cool any better, is not as dependable (potential pump failures), and costs more.
At full speed H100i is over twice as loud as PH-TC14PE and over three times as loud as NH-D14, but only a couple of degrees cooler on stock CPU.. 6-8c cooler overclocked.

Put 2700rpm fans on the air coolers and they will be just as cool. :)
