Need a cooler for this 8086k I won, not looking at a major oc, 5ghz will suffice, and I expect it'll do 5ghz with ease. So, do I go air or water?

Motherboard has 90.8mm center CPU to near side of x16 PCIe and 70.8mm to near side of x1 PCIe but most peeps don't use it anyway. RAM socket is 50.8mm center CPU to near side of nearest RAM socket so good clearance in all directions.

Vengeance LPX is only 31mm tall.

Define S has 180mm CPU clearance so no problems there either.

Your up to £100 allows for all air cooled CPU coolers and I do not recommend CLCs because the cost more, generally make more noise, don't last as long and if something goes wrong it's almost always the pump so no CPU cooling at all until new cooler is installed .. so no computer to use plus cost of all new cooler.

Starting at the highest priced be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4 has both looks and cooling at £80, Dark Rock Pro 3 is almost as good at £75, NH-D15S is good at £75, Cryorig R1 Universal has both looks and cooling at £73, NH-D14 is still one of the best at £71 but does not have PWM fans, NH-U14S is good at £63, PH-TC14PE is quite good at £60. That is most of the top tier that OcUK stock. We can add Thermalright TRUE Spirit 140, Le Grand Macho RT and Silver Arrow IB-E Extreme available elsewhere. I wold probably go for Dark Rock Pro 3 or 4, R1 Ultimate, PH-TC14PE or NH-U14S

Honestly at this point you can choose almost any cooler you want, so what ones do you like?

I will add that Dynamic GP14 case fans included with your case are almost worthless so a couple new front intakes would be a good idea. What GPU are you using? I've found 2x-3x good intake fans speed controlled to cycle with component temps with all PCIe back slot covers removed to increase rear vent area around GPU almost always give good case airflow with low noise, even at full load. One of my favorite is PH-F140MP for about £14. but most are out of stock right now. Next up is something like Fractal Design Venturi HP-14 PWM (PWM are my preference) at about £18 and best are be quiet! Silent Wings 3 140mm PWM High Speed at £2. The other extreme is Arctic F14 PWM or F14 PWM PST (has female socket for daisy-chaining fans) for £7. While not as good are others are not bad and very low priced.

Edit: Alphacool customers have some real horror stories trying to resolve problems with them. I think I would avoid them.

In all my years on this forum, that's the most detailed answer to a question I've posed. :) Cheers doyll. I share your cynicism about closed loops. I would prefer quiet air to noisy pumps. GPU will a 2080/2070 or 1080ti, depending on my bank balance.

I did muse about getting a 360mm solution since this case is pretty epic for radiators. That Dark Rock HSF looks outstanding though. I have a Dark Power Pro PSU, and its lasted me 8 years. Think I'll get one of those. Cheers all!

I'll be honest, I literally got hearing aids 3 weeks ago because I'm deaf (apparently) and even on the Extreme profile I can't hear my Corsair H115i pump over the Quiet profile fans. I wouldn't rule out an AIO, I was always under the impression they were quieter.

not ruled it out tbh. I don't like the mounting mechanism on the DR4, had one like that before and it was a proper nightmare.

Im using my good old Thermaltak True 120 that I used with my 2500k cpu... But I can only overclock mine to 4.9ghz as the temps go into the low 80s when cpu stressing.

Even if stone deaf air cooling is logical choice. CLCs cost more, don't last as long and when they die it's almost always the pump so system can't be used until buying and installing a new cooler. With air the only thing to go wrong is fan, and if fan goes system still as limited cooling or any fan can be used until suitable replacement is in hand.

Dark Rock 4 or Dark Rock Pro 4? Some of the new be quiet! have different mount. In all honesty I've mounts be quiet! coolers many times and they are not hard at all, but their instructions didn't used to be very good. Only mounting I found hard was on 2011 because it has to all be done from front side. I almost always do a practice install without TIM with coolers / mounts I'm not familiar with. Helps determine exactly where to set cooler so mounting screws are aligned and start easily.

ThaermalRIGHT Thermalright, not thermalfake. There have been many TRUE Spirit 120 models over the years. But cooling a 2500k @ 4.9GHz with TRUE Spirit 120 cooler is very good. Must have hit the silicone lottery jackpot with that one. They do very well for a small 4 heatpipe cooler. They evolved from HR-01 back in 2005, then Ultra 4 heatpipe in 2006, and Ultra Extreme 6 heatpipe in 2007. I'm still using an original 4 heatpipe Ultra as well as smaller 6 heatpipe Ultima 90 from 2007. I've changed mounts a couple of times and fans, but it's still going strong.

Pretty much as stated. Pick which of the top air coolers that you fancy. I've got the NH-U14S (push/pull) and it can cope easily with 5GHz on a I7-8700k (and that's all cores). So you would be fine.
