I have a gigabyte 965p-s3, my dilemma is that currently I have 2x2 gig sticks of corsair ddr2, which are quite high units. My Thermaltake max orb covers my first 2 memory sockets which means my ram can't run in dual channel. I need a _good_ socket 775 cooler that won't do this, I've been looking at this: http://www.frostytech.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=2045

I'm not interested in forking out for a 120 extreme + fans (**** that thing is big).

Any ideas?

Depends how much you wanna spend. I've built a few systems lately using the "akasa 965" cooler. Clears all the dimm slots, works exceptionally well for the cost (£13) and you can take the fan off to make installation easier. Also consider the "arctic cooling freezer 64 pro" around the same price as the akasa and works the same. For summat a bit more expensive and sophisticated, I'd go with the "Noctua" cooler with a noctua fan, lots of clearance and great performance, albeit a little on the tall side. lastly your choice of the zalman cooler is good too, very efficient, quiet, looks nice and built well and cools very well. Also give clearance aplenty for your memory.:)
