Hi, im building my first pc andive bought an am3 processor and motherboard but when i search the cooling section very few say 'am3'.
Is there a difference in size or will 'am2' cooling fans/sinks work and fit onto an am3 board and chip?
Thanks for any help.
Being my 1st pc i can imagin i will be back on these boards more once all the parts arrive :-D lol

(list of parts i got)
AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 810 2.6GHz (Socket AM3)
Gigabyte GA-MA790XT-UD4P (Socket AM3) PCI-Express DDR3
XFX ATI Radeon HD 4850 "XXX Edition" 512MB GDDR3
OCZ Reaper 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-14400 (1800MHz) Tri-Channel
If any of that helps :-S

Got some good news as I wasnt sure either took a gamble, I have 2 coolers here.

Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme CPU Cooler (Socket AM2/LGA775)

Thermalright TRUE Black 120 CPU Cooler (Socket AM2/LGA775)

AM2 is same size screw holes as AM3 so definitly fits, I'm about to build a new PC & I've just checked the mounting holes. :)

AM2 compatible coolers will fit on AM3 boards, the connections are identicle.

I'll go ahead and suggest the Sunbeam Core Contact Freezer, very good cooler.

One other thing to mention: Phenom II's only support dual chanel memory, so that triple channel won't work as far as I am aware.

Yeah true, although I dont blame him getting that kit it runs on lower volts 1.65v as opposed to the standard 1.8/1.9v dual channel kits.

I do know that OcUK will be getting in these very soon, basically same Micron chips as the X58 ram that OCZ sell.

Thanks for the info guys.
I had no idea about the ram thing, got lower volts but didnt no triple channel wouldnt work. So will it run as a matched pair and a single, or not at all? :-S
As for the cooler, im looking for anything that works on am2 aswell, thanks.
i know the Sunbeam Core Contact Freezer has been sugested. Is that the best mix of silence and cooling for the £30 range? Thats roughly how much im looking at spending.
:-)

regarding the ram issue I realy don't know enough to comment any further than I have.

I've got the sunbeam running in my fortress about a foot from my head at roughly half speed and it's less noticable than my case fans. Obviousely if you wanted you could swap the fan witha Noctua which are supposedly very quiet and very good.

A great cooler for the money, only thing is that it can be a bit tricky to it, requires a lot more effort than you would expect.

i just realised, i kinda need a low profile cooler coz of my case.
is the Scythe Ninja Mini CPU Cooler any good?
Or you know of a low profile one thats good? i have about 15cm from chip to side of case.
Or is the Arctic Cooling Freezer Xtreme any good, i know its on offer atm.
thanks again.

actualy, the freeze xtreme seams really good off reviews, might be worth shoving it all in a good old fasion beige case just so i can use this massive heatsink fan, what you think?
Think its a call between this, or squeezing in my small case with a ninja mini.
