Am wanting to go back to air cooling so I can clock my Phenom 940BE to 3.8+ again (I don't need it I just like to tinker).

At the moment I'm on a Zalman Reserator2 passive water cooler and it can just about handle 3.6ghz at 1.45v, the thermals however will spiral when stability testing to around 68c which is about the point my chip becomes unstable and the PC will crash.

Ideally I would like to hear from users pumping 1.5-1.55vcore (or more?) through their chip and keeping it around 60c, 65c absolute max. I ask this as the thermals for AMD vs Intel are very different and most cooler reviews are Intel Core2 or i7 based.

Now your cases may be better cooled than mine. My system cooling is as follows twin, silent, low rpm 80mm fans front and rear, 140mm PSU fan of the Corsair HX850, front 120mm fan in a Lian-Li HDD rack. This is obviously limited but I intend to keep the case so I need to work around this :)

Coolers I am looking at are...
Akasa AK-CC4008HP01 Venom Voodoo CPU Cooler
Noctua NH-D14 Dual Radiator CPU Cooler
BeQuiet Dark Rock Pro CPU Cooler

As far as height goes I know my case can accommodate a Scythe Ninja as that was my last air cooler maybe another 10mm on that, I still have this unit but it REALLY needs a hell of a lot of air blown over it to take the heat away, twin 1900rpm fans. I think the thick blade spacing is what lets this cooler down, the heatpipe contact to body of the cooler is pretty weak too looking at it.

Probably my only other option would maybe be a Reserator XT

I have a Reserator 2 which is passive, the Reserator XT is an actively cooled solution which is a possibility also, but I would be happy with a high end air solution which is silent at idle. I have considered adding 2 80x160mm rads but I would only do this if I could do it cheaply and I am still not convinced of the cooling performance this would offer.

I have the Akasa Venom (not the voodoo) - word of warning, it is deceptively massive. Fantastic though and really quiet. I don't see the point in getting the voodoo when the venom alone can handle that cpu.

Unless the voodoo has really come down in price recently, I suggest the normal venom.

I should be able to fit it height wise it should be about the size of my old ninja going off the 120mm fans. I had one 120mm fan more or less sitting directly on my ram and it fit in the case. It's all about the vcore though, i'll be pushing 1.5v 1.55v if a cooler can handle it.

Noctua NH-D14 cools my 1090t @ 4ghz very well but make sure your memory will fit under it.

What about modding the Reserator?

Yeah my ram doesn't have high heat spreaders so I'm good and I know that unit 100% fits my mobo too. Have considered modding the Res2, I could uprate the pump, buy two 80x160.. rads and a better CPU block but that's approaching £100 for a system that wont perform better than high end air, I also don't want extra desk clutter with external rads etc

I just use a H50 on my X6 and even Oc'd it never tops 59C (that's while running LinX/IBT/Prime), gaming it's usually mid 40's.
