Hi all,

I got a XFX GeForce 6800 XT 256MB PCI-E and I'm looking for a quiet aftermarket cooler. I don't play PC games, just watch videos! The stock fan makes a horrid loud slightly-high-pitched noise.

Can anyone please help spec me a cooler for this?

Much appreciated.

Hi darude,

If i were you i'd try the Accelero S1 here: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-023-AR

Compatible with 6800 series cards and is very effective.

You may get away with running it passive for total silence but even if it did need a fan you could add a 120mm fan and run it @ 5v or 7v which would make it very nearly silent.

Not only is it effective but it is also very reasonably priced!

Thought about that and it looks like the upper most circled screw (from your picture that i've reposted below) is to help mount the cooler over the ram.

I think the lower two are the ones that provide pressure on the gpu core. They're laid out on a diagonal accross the core:

It's a bit like a 6600gt i own.

I'd imagine you could just use 2x of the S1's 4x mounts on a diagonal to fit the cooler. :)

Just done a little check on the S1 again, the width of the square to fit the screws are 53.4mm apart, it looks to be a perfect square, if this is so then diagonal length is 75.5mm. I just check the length between the two lower screws of my 6800XT and it's about 81mm.

Check my diagram for a little more info:

Would it be easy enough/efficient to just unpower the fan on the card and use a fan that takes up a PCI slot to cool the heatsink on the card?

I did that with my 6600gt to reduce noise.

Here you can see the dual led fans mounted below the card.

Just unscrew the cover on the cooler and you're good to go.

A nice quiet 120mm fan should work out well.

As for heatsinks, i looked on the web re: the S1 and your card and they are indeed incompatible. Looks like a combination of components getting in the way and mounting holes (the two straddling the core) not matching. Some of the zalman coolers (VF700 'like you mentioned' and possibly the VF900) will fit.

Didn't know it was out of stock, so I've cancelled the order. gt, is it a Vantec PCI fan you're using, are they any good? Looking at the specs, at the Vantec's lowest speed, it seems to provide more air flow (CFM) then the Antec Vcool at it's highest speed. So I might consider one of them instead.

:) I'm just testing it out, unplugged the stock fan and resting a 120mm fan blowing towards it (it's resting a fair distance away from the card) and the idle core temp (60-65 C) is the same as it was with the stock. Without the 120mm fan on, idle temp was around 70-75 C. Hmm... is there a toolkit to help me mount the huge fan to face towards the card?

Well this is what I've done, I found a 70mm fan lying around as part of an old CPU heatsink, detached it from there and stuck it on this card.
Suprising, it works a treat, temp idle at 55C, so it's 5C lower than the stock fan and I couldn't hear it!

So if anyone else has a noisy card, just remove the stock fan and stick a quiet small fan to replace it. :)

Nice one fella! Looks like a very effective (and elegant) solution!

Sorry i didn't respond to your question about the vantec... only just spotted this thread again! :(

To answer though... yes it was the vantec. TBH i'd say your solution is a much nicer one! :)
