Quick question about CPU temps. I have just upgraded to a cooler master 212 evo cooler from a stock Intel one. Before switching, my i7 3770s had good temps and stayed fairly static when idle.

With the new cooler fitted and all the same hardware the idle temps flicker from 19 to 29 a few times a second on two cores and 21 to 26 on the other two. If I load it with prime95 they only go up and down by a few degrees.

Is that normal behaviour? I cleaned off the old thermal paste before applying new paste that was supplied with the cooler.

It's perfectly normal to have difference of temperatures on the cores.

My 3570K had a 10C variation between two cores. Once was something like 23C while the other was about 33C at idle. I think it's something to do with how the IHS paste is set but I'm not sure about that :)

If CPU load is changing so will the heat.. and quick load change is common.

Chip core heats & cools almost instantly when working.. and reading the core temperature give very quick movement depending on what software is used.

Are you using the same monitoring software?

I use Open Hardware Monitor 6.0 Beta now. Before with OHM 5.1 Beta the line graph was a smooth line. Now using OHM 6.0 Beta the line is jagged showing less than a degree change.

I am using cpuid hw monitor, although speedfan shows the same. My only reason for asking is that on the stock cooler it fluctuated a couple of degrees. Could it just be down to the new cooler or paste?

Maybe.
I can understand your concern. With everything the same except cooler I would not expect idle temps to flicker any differently than before.

What are load temps now compared to before?
