Cooler Problem

Recently i have noticed my idle temps on my i7 are up from around 40c to around 55c-60c. When using Prime 95 this jumps within a few seconds to over 90c.

I presume its due to original heat sink i installed. Its probably become unseated in some way and the TIM i used wasn't great.

The system its self is well maintained and isn't dusty or dirty internally. Nothing else has been changed and the system has been running fine for over a year.

Rather than simply reseat the Heat sink I plan to purchase a new one. The one i bought at the time isn't great but at the time of i7 hitting the market there seemed to be little choice.

Now here is my problem. I've googled around for a good few days and read perhaps 30-40 reviews. I've seen some coolers i like the look of, however: I use a Asus Rampage 2 Extreme and utilise all DIMM bays.

The majority if not all coolers I have seen in some way obstruct the 1 or 2 DIMM bays on the Rampage 2 extreme. I've no intention of removing the ram modules as it is needed. Also id rather not remove the fins from the top of the Dominator modules.

Is anyone able to advise me of a decent cooler that will fit the rampage 2 extreme and not obstruct the DIMM slots or the north bridge HS. Perhaps someone had a similar issue?

I've already ruled out the Corsair H50 and H70, due to equal performance to mainstream HSF's. Cost isn't really an issue, id just like to find a suitable solution.

Thanks in advance for any advice:)

One cooler i used on my p6t deluxe v2 was a Thermalright ultra extreme, this fitted fine, as when i first built my rig, i put my ram (6gb) in the wrong slots, ram is ocz reaper which is taller than dominators, i would have had no issues if i used 12gb.

Pics with ram in wrong slots.

Very good cooler as well, coped fine on my i7 @4ghz.

I'm also very fond of the thermalright ultra extreme and would recommend it to anyone. It doesn't clash with any of the ram slots on my Gigabyte UD5, nor did it cause problems with my older P45 board. It's thin enough that it's hard to imagine it clashing with any motherboard.

In general it appears to react well to lapping, though it's near the top of the pile without this time consuming process. Setter's using two fans, the normal arrangement is one on the side of the ram slots. I mounted mine with the fan on the other side because a fan pulling seemed more sensible than one pushing, and it was months before I realised my error.

By the same token though, if you get a different heatsink and mount the fan on the "wrong" side you should avoid any clearance issues.
