Hiya guys,
I've got a very nice Sparkle 512mb Geforce 6600LE here, but it has one very nasty little 'bug'?- Until it warms up at bootup (Approx 1 min), I get an unpleasant noise from the fan. Not sure if this has always been the case, but I only noticed it when I replaced the PSU with a much quieter model. When running, the noise level is perfectly acceptable, but if it will go quieter it would be nice :D
Basically, this means I'm looking at one of several things-
1. RMA the card for one which doesn't do this.
2. Ignore it :p (No idea if this is stocking up for later problems though!)
3. Replace the cooler with something else- I was thinking the Zalman VF900, have heard too many bad things about the NV silencers. (Any idea if OCUK are going to be getting these?, or for that matter the VF700?)
This brings its own set of problems though, as I seem unable to find a reliable source of info on the card- This is what I have-

Color is slightly different but still :D

Anyone with any thoughts?

So the fan is noisy when booting but then in Windows slows down?

If so, this is normal, at boot the fan will be running at 100% and keeps doing that until the driver loads and slows the fan down.

A Zalman VF700 is a better cooler than the stock one and it can run at 5V (nearly silent) and 12V (quiet) or on a fan controller like I have which allows 7V to 12V

The commisario said that the vf-900 is 1-2 weeks away (said this last week). They sound like they will arrive about the same time as the nv7900.

Probably should have worded it better :p
To me anyway, the fan sounds like a bearing is going or something, this is a noise more like a HDD on seek than just running fast.
I'm pretty sure the noise is heat related- If I simply sit in the BIOS for a minute, or turn the PC off and straight back on again, then the noise has gone, but after a cold boot it is back.
This means my thought is a failing bearing- Would one of these start working better when it gets to operating temps?

If the VF900 is coming in within a week, then I think I'll probably wait, as this is something recyclable. Any news on prices?

Cheers

I wouldn't bother with the VF900 on your card mate, it'll probably be overkill. I believe the VF900 is really designed for the X1800/X1900 range of cards. I would've thought the VF700 cu cooler would be perfect and probably a bit cheaper too.

I agree, I have a VF700 on my 7800GT and while the performance isn't that good as it is still 65C it is very quiet which was my main concern with the stock cooler.

Overkill, but recyclable overkill ;)
Another few quid is fine for something that can be re-used in September or so :)

Dont count out the NV Silencer dude (Arctic Cooling nVidia 5 (6800 Series) VGA Silencer (HS-009-AR)), I have fitted over six all varying models without any problems, just take your time & RTFM :D
