Cooler too tall

Hi all,

I’ve hit a major snag with my high end new build.

Proposed build;
8700k with a bit of simple OC to 4.7/4.8 ghz
Silverstone RL06 tempered glass edition which has mesh front, 3 front fans and one exhaust.
Noctua D15S cooler.
Corsair LPX 3200

Major problem that PC Parts picked up on is case can only take 158mm tall cooler and D15S is 160. Even though it’s their lower profile D15.

What could I swap it for? Researched for ages but a lot of them are just as tall or taller.

Want headroom to possibly clock to 4.9/5 down the road if chip allows.

Only got cpu so far so can swap purchase of components if needed.

Cheers

@doyll can advise, there's a Thermalright cooler that's lower than that I believe. Have you checked to see if anyone has tried that cooler/case combo? Sometimes measurements have some conservative allowances.

I wouldn't advise an AIO unless you're particularly keen on the look. High end air coolers can be amazing.

Maybe consider a change of case to accommodate a bigger cooler.

I have the Phanteks Pro M with tempered glass side panel and am really pleased with it. It also has 194mm CPU clearance, so no problems with massive coolers.

Thanks for suggestion, looks a nice case.

Reason I picked the RL06 is the mesh front and three fans give really good airflow over all components.
The fans are good quality ones as well so a lot of case for the money.

Had thought about Scythe Fuma Rev.B or Le Grande Maco RT as they would fit but came to the Noctua as it’s slight better performance.

If the case can only take a max cooler of 158mm in height and your cooler is only 2mm taller, I am sure it will be fine. The case manufacture wil give you some tolerance.

I fit a NH-D14 which is 160mm in height in a Corsair 100r, which has a max cooler height of 150mm. It had about 2mm clearance from the side panel still.

Thanks C6ckneyGeezer.

Take it that it's okay to have the fins a couple of mm's from the case side?

Most Thermalright Machos have are over 160mm high.
Macho 120 would be below it.

Very affordably priced Scythe Mugen 5 is quite comparable to NH-D15s in cooling per noise while having full DIMM/PCI-e clearance.

Anyway biggest challenge in overclocking might be toothpaste under heatspreader, which Intel even struggles to attach properly...
And instead of just filling unevenness between CPU die and heatspreader there can be layer of that toothpaste in between them.

Scythe seems to be quite hard to find

Is that the Mugen 5 Rev.B?
OC to say 4.7ghz should be okay then without massive cooling or delidding?

Have you actually fit the cooler into case on CPU to be sure it will not fit? I ask because I have found many companies give CPU clearance specs that are a few mm less then actual clearance just to be on the safe side, so if you haven't tried it I suggest you do so, you might get lucky.

Oh, and just for info, NH-D15 and NH-D15S are both same height. The difference is offset base due to different heatpipe shapes. ;)

Cheers for the info doyll.

Haven't fitted anything yet as the only things purchased so far are the 8700k and 1080 Ti.
Ordered the Scythe Mugen 5 from OC last night. It's a decent bit cheaper than the D15S but with almost comparable performance.

Indeed, Scythe Mugen is a good cooler. Noctua are good but usually price is higher than others equally as good because of name.

Just a big of FYI, most good coolers are 160mm or taller, so in the future make sure case has 160mm CPU clearance at the very least, more is better because some are up to 171mm tall .. like TRUE Spirit 140 Power which is one of the best and lower priced than others too.

Will do next time. Was looking for very good airflow case and the RL06 seems to be great for that. Thought I'd read it was just over 200mm wide but obviously not. Surprising that they would make a case nowadays with only 158mm cooler clearance although they could be expecting water cooled setups.

If only OC had a free or low cost 5-7 day delivery as £8.70 for a cooler and two sticks of ram seems a lot. Don't need next day. Tin foil hat on.... :o
