Wow did i ever make a mistake here. Transfered all my components over and enjoyed the extra space everything had. Sat down to play moh airborne and about 5 minutes in the pc shuts down. Checked the hardware monitor in the bios and according to that the north bridge had to have been over 90c as thats the shutdown temp, the actual northbridge was at the time cooling down from around 87c when i checked it.

Thats with my q6600 g0 at 3.6 ghz, clocked it back to 3ghz at the minute and i think its still rather toasty.

Mobo is a maximus formula so i think i need a fan positioned over that heatsink to get my overclock back. Anyone know if one of those antec spot coolers would tame the inferno that curently is my northbridge? (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=SY-000-AN&groupid=701&catid=57&subcat=399)

LOL 80c on the NB , they get unstable at around 50c on the maximuss.

first off all what voltage are you using to get these temps and there most likly is no airflow in ** case (how many fans in and out and are there lots of messy wires ? )

Voltages with the exception of the cpu are at defaults, 1.4 on the cpu currently. Wires are pretty tidy as they are, 1 intake at the bottom of the case and 3 exhausts. Think just need to add more intakes on the case.

Most of these fancy copper patterns (which are probably half the reason motherboards are getting so pricey, given that copper has been at record prices in recent times), are designed to make use of the airflow given off by the stock processor coolers, where the the fan is parallel to the motherboard. The heat sinked onto these eleborate passive coolers is then wafted away by the stock Intel cooler on a Maximus.

Unfortunately, the "elaborate" cpu coolers such as the Tuniq Tower; TRUE; Noctua etc. have changed the orientation of the fan, thereby reducing the passive cooling on the motherboard's pretty cooper patterns... with not so good consequences for extreme overclocking! ;)

I can't believe how bad the airflow is in this case. 1 intake which is located at the bottom if the case which means the vid cards will be snagging any air it intakes regardless of how the fans angled. Everything has jumped up in temp drastically, even a modest overclock to 3ghz is giving be temps in the mid 70,s for the cpu, used to be maybe 55-60 for 3ghz.

I think you on your own gerard.. i have a cosmos and its very cool and very good airflow. but im not running similar kit.

Are you on water? You could incorporate the NB into the loop? (With a suitable block ofc).

Otherwise it's a case of getting a good active cooler for the NB.

I really think im just gonna put my components back into the antec p182. Temps are up on everything in this case besides the vid cards which are whoring all the intake air at the bottom of the case.

Seriously what genius came up with the idea of putting an intake at the bottom of the case knowing that actively cooled vid cards would suck it in and exhaust it? Even angling the fan doesn't really make any difference.

Temps are up by around 15c+ on the cpu, northbridge at 3.6ghz is roasting despite it being perfectly workable in the antec case. Id love to know why coolemaster designed this case giving all the bay covers meshed panels then didn't bother putting intake fans in them similar to the antec 900 gamers case.

Unless i buy some of those karma bay coolers thers really no way to mount intake fans so thats more money out, ideally id need 2 of them but with the dvd drive taking one slot ive 4 slots left and those bay coolers need 3 bays or so.

Im just gobsmacked at how badly thought out the cooling in this case is, i could buy one of those bay coolers but ive no idea how much it would affect temps (if at all). Then for the northbridge id be sure to need one of those spot cooler fans..more money. =/

Hi Gerard,

Have a look here: 12cm Fan bracket for Cosmos

It'll allow you to place another 120mm fan over the hard drives (there are fittings for them, you'll need to place the 3.5 bay up 2 slots though if you use it) thus creating another air intake and cooling the drives at the same time. Just ordered one last night.

Maybe also consider replacing the coolmaster standard fans for something with better CFM airflow, like the Sharkoon Golf Ball fans '2000' ones, it should still be quiet enough.

Hope this helps? :)

This was one of my concerns for the coolermaster cosmos, every decent review ive read has suggested it does have issues with cooling its a negative air pressure issue cos you have one fan on the bottom and more on the top, I think the scythe karma bays are the best bet to give it some better cooling.

But yeah its still very odd that u get lower temps in the Antec P182 cos thats terrible alround imo but perhaps a mid 120mm fan in the mid section would give plenty airflow to all the components on the inside.

The one thing you may want to consider which no one else has I dont think is that Asus are pretty bad when it comes to that northbridge heatsink, in fact when I got my X38 bog standard Asus board I used a hair dryer on it to melt the bubblegum transfer pad underneath all of that giant heatsink.

Took me a good hour or 2 of carefully taking it off and then I used nail polish and brute force and brillo steel pad to get rid off the pink chewing gum thats blocking like 50% of the heat transfer to those lovely northbridge/heatsink copper/alu heatsinks.

After I did this I noticed the temps dropped sharply from 50-60 to 40-45 average :)

And I dont even overclock.... but still done it cos ive heard X38/X48northbridges get hot anyhow a lot say oh there stable to run in there 80s-90s but I dont belive that !

Due to this im considering just going Abit/Gigabyte cos they seem to not be using pink chewing gum transfer pads which block all the heat transfer and get higher temps....

The fan bracket imo wouldn't help matters much. It lets me duct air onto the hard drives yes but at the same time if i were to add a front 120mm intake the hard drive fan would be taking most of that air. Even the new cosmos s has no front intake so to me it looks to be more of a design flaw, instead they opted for a side panel cooler.

I might take off the northbridge heatpipe assembly and redo the compond, will probably end up just putting the components into the antec again though =/

LMK if you decide to get rid of the Cosmos....thinking of changing my P180 to a Cosmos S, but may consider a Comsos.....see you in the MM ;)

lol kevpuk you assisting him on the way to MM now ;)

Im tad gutted about the cosmos as much as I liked it I dont think its the case for me. I dont think ill ever find a heavy thick steel large Case + with sound proofing and silence built in mind.

I really dunno if i could flog it on mm, this thing in the box is amazingly heavy, would probably cost £30 or more to post the bugger. Its something like 38lbs in weight, then factor in the large cardboard box etc.

Very sorry to hear about your problems. You might like to know that with all the fans installed, the Cosmos "S" is so far the best case for "air cooling" I have used (out does the stacker EVO - even with a loaded side fan tray, and the Silverstone Tj09) though in comparison to the standard Cosmos, you do make a sacrifice in terms of noise (or lack of!).
