Coolermaster PSU question

If it's rebranded, chances are it'll be made by Seasonic. That's who Corsair use anyway, but tbh I have no idea on Coolermaster, can't find any leads on a google search. Can't see a reason why Coolermaster wouldn't make their own PSU's. They're good quality PSU's in any case. I'm using one right now :)

Heh, I like how you plucked Seasonic out of mid-air closeratio :)

You're right in a way though Gunther, wrong in the sense that rebranded isn't quite the correct word to be using. Yes, Cooler Master along with almost every other power supply company (barring Enermax & Seasonic) gets their power supplies built by other manufacturers, what are often called OEM builders.

In Cooler Master's case, the OEM builder is Enhance Electronics (also used by Akasa & Silverstone). If you look at Enhance's catalogue of products though, you won't see items matching the modular line of supplies that Cooler Master offer. So far from being rebranded, it is more a case that Enhance have been contracted to build them since they have the facilities and the necessary expertise to do so.

If you wanted a proper example of rebranded supplies then look no further than OCZ and their GameXStream line, which are just FSP Epsilons with a different logo.

Coolermaster are rebranded in the same way Gigabyte PSU's are made by Channel Well Technology. Antec and Tagan build their own PSU's I think also.

To be honest, I don't see the point of buying something that's been re-branded, might as well pay that little bit extra and get the proper unit from the original manufacturer. Enermax & Seasonic PSU's are highly regarded because they make their own damn units, their not just plastering a stupid logo on something someone else made and because of that, they actually know about Power supplies, whereas Coolermaster et al have no expertise.

Isn't it mostly just to save on building their own facilities for design and production?

Silverstone earned themselves a strong reputation mostly through their Zeus line of supplies, which were rebranded Etasis units. In terms of quality they eclipse anything Enermax or Seasonic have made, they are just a rather outdated design. You could buy directly from Etasis in this case, but they are no cheaper and if anything they are a bit harder to source.

The 1000w/1200w Thermaltake Toughpowers are among the best power supplies ever made, yet you would rate them lower since they had them built by CWT? How about PC Power & Cooling getting their Turbocools built by Win-Tact?

I guess I don't see why you associate self-built with being superior.

Re-branded would make no difference if the company thats builds the units is competant.

For example, why would corsair go to the effort of building a dedicated production plant, when if can effectivley "rent" expertise and equipment from an established manufacturer.

Corsair will then just make thier little slice of cash ontop of the production costs of the corsair branded units. its just business.
A great example of this is the car industry, the ford focus ST is actualy running a re-branded Volvo engine.....some Volvos are running about with mitzubishi engines under the bonnet.....why? becuse its cheaper to use an existing model rather than designing your own and then going through all the hastle of setting up a production plant.

their not just plastering a stupid logo on something someone else made and because of that, they actually know about Power supplies, whereas Coolermaster et al have no expertise.

Well its a bit more involved than that, corsair may say to enermax, we want a million units that meet specifications a,b,c,d
Enermax may then set up a dedicated "corsair" production line in thier factory, probably by modifying one of their existing lines.
so although they are made by enermax, they are not really enermax units, they are simpy based on enermax established production methods and are built to the spec of the customer (corsair in this case)
