I'm looking for a cooler for a q6600 or something similar for a friends computer... i would prefer a cooler without a backplate if possible but if absolutely necesary a backplate for support is acceptable, i have used zalmans before which had backplates, does the noctua or coolermaster V8 have backplates if so is there any that dont?

There will possibly be some small overclocking being done but nothing major... something to the equivelant of a q6600 to 3.0Ghz maximum..

Backplates are essential especially for heavy heatsinks and to provide extra pressure for contact to the CPU so they are VERY necessary a lot of the times. Looking at the size of the Noctua or Coolermaster V8, I think its obvious there.

But if you don't want a backplate one and rather the push-pin system, then something like the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro or Akasa AK-967 Nero Direct Contact Heatpipe will do the job perfectly. They should handle the Q6600 at 3Ghz reasonablly well.

Why don't you want a cooler without a back plate? They are more tedious to fit but have a much more secure fit.

The Coolmaster V8 has an awkward back plate but givens its size and weight i can see why.
