When I bought the 45W 65nm X2 4050e for my media center, it was probably the coolest running AM2 CPU I could get.

The new X3 Phenom II look quite good for the price, and what with them being 45nm, would they run cooler than my current cpu? (even though these new cpus are 95W parts?)

If you undervolt it then you'd be suprised how cool you can get it but you'd be hard pushed to beat the X2.

My silent system is using a 65nm underclocked Athlon X2 5000 Black Edition running 0.8volts and 1.8GHz - passive cooled. :D

Hmm I never thought of under volting my current X2. I'd love to get a passive heatsink for it, but with my case, I dont have much height for anything extreme.

Currently its about 50'C on idle with a 1000rpm fan. If I do anything over about 30% CPU, then the fan revs up and I can hear it. Sometimes in Vista Media Center, the wmplayer hangs and it sits there in the background running at 100%, hence I get noise...

50'c!

Mine idles at room temperature, silent 120mm rear case fan is all the cooling I have.

Yeah, I have it encased in a wooden cabinet, no room behind for air, it just get's hot in there. Thats why I dont think a passive heatsink is an option really.

Well definitely try under-volting, it does make a good difference to temps.
