Cooling a AMD 6000+ Windsor

Hi everyone. Currently I have a Hiper Low Profile CPU cooler and have been using it without any problem with my old 4200+ cpu for a while.

I've upgraded to a 6000+ and my machine was randomly shutting down shortly after boot.
Currently I've had to underclock it from 3ghz to 2ghz and i'm still hitting temps from a min of 50 to a max of 80!!!

Basically my question is. What CPU cooler would be best for me? I dont need a low profile in this case. I would prefer to have a cooler which has to be bolted to the board itself since I have no idea where my original retention bracket has got to. Didnt really want to spend the earth on getting a new cooler/bracket for a £30 cpu upgrade (my fault for not looking into it too much beforehand, i know:()

also need a new sff psu for it since the one in my case is now a little underpowered given the wattage requirements of this blasted CPU.

thanks in advance

I used to have a 9700NT Zalman HSF on my Windsor core 6000+ X2, prior to that I was using an old Thermaltake tower cooler, and the load temps would shoot up to the mid 80's before shutting down, but with the Zalman it never went above 45c even when running Prime95 Blend Test for hours.

hmm, thanks. dont really fancy paying £40+ for a cooler though to be honest. was hoping around the 15-20 sort of price bracket. (sorry dont mean to sound tight. its just that spending only £30 on a cpu. i might as well have just gone for a lower wattage version and paid a few quid more. <slaps head>

Yeah mate, the 9700's little brother will be perfect for your needs, and at that price it's a steal!!

If I was on AM2 still and was in need of a cooler I would definitely snap one of those up at this price...

I bet there are some people ordering several of these because of the prices and then selling them off for a profit!!

Any third party heatsink should be able to cool it, something like the above Zalmans or the Arctic Freezer 64 pro.

I tried googling that case, and it comes up with an HTPC case???

Anyway, how much are you willing to spend on a PSU?

There are loads of PSU's on here!

OCZ ones are probably some of the cheapest, and are still decent enough quality wise.

yes its a htpc case... albeit a slightly larger than normal one. this is my under the telly pc. (actually its my only pc now, got rid of all the others since having a child substantially put a dampener on PC time.. except the one in my arcade cab that is. :))

The Freezer Pro 64 will fit in most cases, unless they are really small! How much are you looking to spend on a PSU and what does it have to power?

its a psu for a MATX case/board
powering a stupidly high wattage cpu (windsor)
ati 4730
3 hd's
1 dvdrw
wifi card
tv card
loads of usb stuff

i pretty much know that i must have been pushing the 250watt psu which is in there before i upgraded the cpu.

for the cooler.. the main point is that my retention bracket on my mobo is gone bye bye. i needed a cooler which (like my current Hiper low profile) bolts on directly to the mobo.

from what i read before i ordered the Zalman, it required removing the bracket to mount it hence me buying. but it looks like from the zalman website you clip it on to the bracket as normal. :(

I have an old AM2 retention bracket here in the cupboard, I could send it to you for the cost of postage?

ooh ooh ooh. that would be grand! thanks. doesn't look like you can pm on here still so if you could email me on ocuk at the funky gibbon dot net that would be lovely. let me know how much you want. paypal gift ok?

It won't cost me much to post it mate, I will email you right now, just forget postage costs..
