cooling a conroe

I've decided on most of my conroe upgrade, its just the HSF left.

Due to my case i'm looking for a HSF with the fan oriented paralell to the mobo like the stock cooler, rather than perpendicular to the mobo as in the arctic cooling freezer 7 pro. I'm also planning to do modest overclocking on the 6300, probably up to about 2.5Ghz, maybe 3Ghz if i get carried away.

Is the stock cooler ok for this, and how noisy is it? If an alternative HSF is the way to go, has anyone got any suggestions? Most reviews for socket 775 coolers seem to focus on performance with pentium 4s or (in the case of multi-socket HSFs) athlon 64s, so i'm not sure how to apply these reviews to conroes.

Noise is an issue, as i use my PC for both gaming and as a media centre. Also, blue LEDs would save me adding them to the HSF/case around the CPU later to complete my case lighting.

Depends what stock cooler you have, stock intel coolers have about 6 different coolers: ones with aluminium cores, ones with small copper cores, ones with a big copper core , then for each of that 3 there are 2 versions one with thicker fins that split up halfway into 2 smaller ones (older ones) and ones that have about twice the ammount of fins as the 1st version and no split into 2 fins from one whatsoever (newer ones).

If you have a copper one with the newer fin design, you can probably do some overclocking, if anything else, you may be able to oc a little bit, but not a lot, Ive had one of these newer ones, and was shocked it did better than those 92 mm half copper half alu zalman hsf's (7k series i think).
Just renember to use as5 and not the standard junk...

If the reviews said its good for a p4, its even better for a conroe, basicly p4's run hotter as conroes, p4's use 90 ish watts and that gives a lot of heat, conroes only do 69 watts, so they are cooler...

Hi I have a copper one with the thick fins that split into smaller ones do you think this will OC a little. Will be getting a Asrock VSTA board so will only aim to go to about 2.1-2.2ghz ?

Id reccomend a Big Typhoon, got mine running with an akasa amber @ 7v, with all other fans now at 5v.

Currently idling or atleast when im just browsing, music, msn etc @ 39 degrees. bout 50 load.

Im pretty chuffed with it :D
