I recently purchased a opteron 175, a friend of mine told me that the stock cooler would be sufficient for the CPU. When under full load it reached 82C so i'm assuming his suggestion was wrong.

I've got a used Arctic Cooling 64 pro, if i cleaned that up and applied some fresh heat conducting paste would that be sufficient to run it at stock speeds (for now), or am i going to need to invest in a newer model of heatsink?

If i do need a new-un what are your recommendations? The quieter and cheaper the better.

A Freezer 64 Pro is more then enough on stock and even if you would clock the CPU.

82c is way too high and can actually damage your CPU.
make sure you mount the cooler proper and don't use too much thermal paste...

Thanks for the help - popped out shortly after making this post and bought some TIM cleaning fluid and thermal paste and got my 64 pro mounted.

Cpu now idles at 38C, and sits around 50C at full load. How much extra you guys reckon i could squeeze out of this CPU? I've got some fairly decent OCZ ram, but to be honest its been so long since i built it i really cant remember what exactly it is.
