Taken off the back plastic to reveal a very warm heatsink. Trying to clean the drive up before sister goes back to uni with it, but just shuts down from overheating. Any suggestions?

Check the power options (in the BIOS and in Windows), and check that/if it can drop the CPU speed down when it's idle, as that will reduce temps. Might also want to check for any programs, spyware etc that are using the CPU fully, as that would also cause overheating.

If its an A60 then update the bios as theres an issue with these models.

What model do you have ?

Thermal paste replacing (albeit different laptop):

Use Notebook Hardware COntrol to monitor your temps and post here. My FS Amilo idles at 50deg, usually at 60deg in average use, and hits 80deg during gaming, causing artefacts!! Debating whether or not to replace the thermal paste as reading around, it is a common problem with mine (thermal paste poorly applied) but scared of breaking something.
