I'm planning to order a x6800 within the next couple of days and am going to get one of those Asus nfroce 4 motherboards which support SLI, the SE edition. i forget the name :P

I'm not planning to overclock, so would the stock be sufficient as well as quiet? If not, what would be a good CPU cooler? Someone recommended the Scythe ninja so I was going to get that, but just thought i'd check here if anyone has any other recommendations, and if I even need it. Don't have a budget really, but don't want to go to watercooling.

I'm still deciding on a case, so not sure about that. Would something that big fit in most cases though?

Also, is installation easy? do I need to buy something to be able to install it? first time build.

Isnt it a crime not to overclock these things?

Go on you know you want to!!!

As for the cooler the sythe ninja can be used passively (no fan) and so will certainly be quiet! And temps shouldnt be too bad although i hear installation can be quite hard. Requires a lot of pressure on the cpu. I dont know how the stock cooler preforms.

Asus P5N32-SLi SE Deluxe nForce4 SLi X16 (Socket 775) PCI-Express Motherboard (MB-174-AS)

only on Pre-Order at the moment though.

If your gettin a Conroe, yes you should overclock, and yes you should get a good cooler. Scythe Ninja Plus is thought to be about the best air solution available

correct me if i am wrong but i dont think the nforce 4 sli boards are compatable with conroe are they?

According to OcUK, the Asus P5N32-SLi SE Deluxe nForce4 does. :)

EDIT: gr1mey beat me to it!

The Schythe Ninja would be a good choice, as would the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7. The Schythe Ninja can be run passivly on low end CPUs, but I doubt it would work on a x6800. Also, are you really sure you need the x6800 if your not going to be clocking? The reason it is so much is due to the unlocked multiplier, making it very easy to clock. Wouldn't you be better saving £400 and get the E6700 which is only 250Mhz slower. And you could really easily make that up with a tiny overclock. As for the installation, no you unlikely need any special tools. Case wise , it might be wort starting a seperate thread in the case section, but the Lian Li pc7 is highly reccomended and makes a great case for a first build. :)

Thanks for the replies :) yes, thats the motehrboard im going to get. I found a place on tottenham court road in london where they are coming in stock in a couple of days so i can go and pick one up from there.

i'm not planning to overclock mainly because i've never done it before and don't want to risk that right now on a very expensive rig. I might do it in the uture though, and i'm planning to keep this CPU now, without upgrades for about 4 years or so if I can. This way, if I do decide to overclock a few years down the line, i have a CPU which can do it easily :)

Installation, do I ned to buy thermal paste or something? i read about that somewhere, but not sure if I need it, or even how to use it, any advice would be greatly appreciated :) If installation for the ninja is hard, i'd rather avoid it because i've never done this before. Are there any other coolers which are almost as good and easy to install? Or is the ninja miles better than any other? Is the freezer 7 easier to install?

The case, i did make a thread there, and of course Lian li came highly recommended, but I just don't like the look of them too much :( I'm going to to tottenham court road again today and look at more cases though, so let's see how that goes.

I would like suggestions to cool my e6600 p5w dh

I have use the Zalman CNPS9500-AT to cool my e6600 @3.6 although load temps are 54 deg C (running orthus prime both cores at 100%) Idel 33 deg C
I am considering a water cooling Kit to use with this mobo so I am looking for suggestions. Has anyone cooled p5w dh with what results?
Please outline a good kit for my needs, Im think cooling my xfx 7900gtx as well as the mainboard. what would you guys suggest.

Why buy a E6800 without overclocking it? You could save A LOT of money by buying a E6600 and overclock it to 2.93Ghz(if thats the speed you want) with stock cooling.

Its easy to OC one of the e6600 to over 3gh without it breaking a sweat :) my load temps are 32 deg now with the e6600 set at 3.12gh, unless you have already spent your money???

Thats what am saying. There is no point getting a E6800 if you know to overclock and all that you want is a e6800 speed.

Thanks for your opinions, but I want a 6800 and I may consider overclocking it in the future. i don't want to upgrade for some time, so I don't want to go for a cheaper one.

Does anyone know how hard the ninja is to install? And waht alternatives are available?

Shouldn't be difficult to install mate. I would go for it and post a question if i experience problems assuming that you got 2pc's.

err dont all the conroes have an unlocked multiplier (and managable with speedstep??)
I wouldnt buy the x6800 sicne it offers so few more as a x6700.
Scythe ninja is the best air cooler avaiable i think, and the arctic cooling freezer 7 pro is the best value cooler i think, also very silent, and more than enough cooling power to keep cpu's cool at stock...
If you plan to overclock in the future i wouldnt buy a p5n32 se, i have the 1st edition and the vcore drops to insane low voltages when stressed, almost impossible to overclok unless you volt mod it.

the SE is supposed to have fixed all those problems though. At any rate, nothing else supports conroe and SLI at the moment, so i'm getting this.

And stelly, yes, get it :p if nothing else, to give me company!

if ther are problems, then I can ask here, but what if I damage my CPU in the process :p Can afford to buy a x6800, but can't afford to buy another CPU :p

How much difference would I notice between the stock and the ninja? is it necessary if i'm not overclocking? or would I notice an immense difference if I got the ninja?
(better if i don't need it. ocuk seem to have lost an order button for the ninja :p)

If you aren't overclocking then the stock cooler will be fine.

You really are however wasting so much money in buying an X6800 just because it is, at stock, the fastest Conroe. An E6600 and E6700 are so much cheaper and can be overclocked to X6800 speeds.

You wont damage your CPU so stop worrying. You're more likely to break it by accidently sitting on it than you are by overclocking.

We cant make you buy a lower spec Conroe but believe me you would be making a mistake if you went for the X6800. Besides, the X6800 wont be the "best" by next year anyway because of the release of the Quad Core CPUs. Seriously - get an E6700 :D

It's such a crime buying a 6800 without overclocking :O. Spending £780 on a CPU when most of the people buying a £250 CPU are getting the same if not better performance is a serious waste of money.

Oh yeh and I'd get a freezer 7 if your not OCing because thats nice and quiet although £10 is hardly going to make a difference if your spending nearly £800 on a CPU which in 6months time wont be the best.

Well I do accept that having an unlocked multiplier is a plus. If i was rich I would buy a E6800 myself just because of the multiplier and build quality which is presumably higher than the rest.

Definetely better mate
