Any recommendations on the best way to cool a Macbook Pro that is hooked up to an external display?

Mine gets crazy hot - I have the fans on override running 4500rpm (without the app it doesn't want to kick up fast enough and the metal is too hot too touch at that point) but even with 4500rpm just above the touch bar is incredibly hot.

A bit annoyed because I never heard anyone mention this when I was doing my research, but I love the mac OS now so no turning back.

I have thought about getting an external gpu housing (as I believe its the GPU that's doing it)... but wondering if there are cheaper alternatives for now.

Don't want any long term damage happening because it is running too hot.

I mean with the lack of mentioning I am just wondering if mine is faulty or something. I see YouTubers with them connected all the time in those vertical stands and there isn't a single mention of heat being an issue so I am a bit confused. It is absolutely fine though when using it as a laptop. It's almost like it shouldn't be used to hook up to an external display...
 
Can you get one of those laptop fan platforms? I'm Sure OCUK would probably sell them. Just additional USB powered fans.

But saying that, aren't Macbooks completely sealed? So it may not work beyond cooling the chassis down
 
I dont think there is anything wrong with your unit, they are just crap.
The one i had really liked to spin its fan up when you did anything more than open a tab in a browser, i had no doubt it was not getting anything like the proper use out of the cpu with throttling.
as for the GPU, well i didnt hit it with much... it was struggling with just the cpu being tasked with a lot.
 
Going to attempt to repaste my mbp soon I think....abit risky but Ive seen people do it on YouTube gain performance, and it takes longer for the fans to spin up. No idea why apple doesn't use decent thermal paste, I'll apply thermal grizzly I think.

That would have been my thought. My GF had an old MBP i think a 2012 model maybe, and the exhaust fan was on the hinge (i assume intake fan was probably there as well). Not sure if they still use that same design, but if that's the case as you say a platform that has fans on it probably wouldn't do a great deal.

Is it possible to measure the internal temps on a mac? Plenty of software available on windows that will show the temps of the various components. At least then you'll be able to have an idea if your components are getting cooked, or if the metal chassis is just dissipating the heat well.

Yes I'm using intel power gadget - under load it hits 99c in 10 seconds and throttles, hovers around 50-60 on desktop doing web browsing.
