All,

You've perhaps seen my other posts focusing in on water cooling as the preferred method of cooling my i7 920 but some time spent researching has led me to believe that if looks and noise aren't a concern then you can obtain very good results with a decent air cooler.

I have, what I believe to be a Zalman CNPS9900A LED cooler currently. What air cooler can you kind people recommend to kick it's ass? My mobo is a GB EX58-UD3R V1.0.

Cheers
DK

a silver arrow cooler or a k2 mount doom, you would need low profile ram with the silver arrow

that and some coolaboratory liquid pro thermal paste would be best

idk how good the single rad air coolers are,if I was running a 920 do today id only look at the dual rad coolers, those chips ran hot once pushed

trouble is your ram being tall as it would cover nearly half the ram slots

Something like a thermal right ultra extreme should be fine, its an old cooler though thermal right do have similair newer models known as spirit. I used the old ultra with heatpiped ocz reaper ram on an x58 setup, done a good job on a 920 @4.2ghz.

Also, I guess I should add some extra fans to help evacuate the heat from inside the case shouldn't I? At the moment, I have one side fan which is pulling in air and one rear fan which is pushing air out of the case. I have space to add another side fan and also what looks like two fans at the top of the case.

Can't find height measurement on Patriot Viper RAM.

Alpenfohn R2 will fit with fans in pull/pull configuration. £49.99

A couple good 120mm intakes in front for sure. I always use good cooler / radiator fans. They overcome airflow resistance of grill, filter, HDD cage, etc much better than stock case fans do.
  • Install one in 3x of 5.25" bays using the stock case bay grills.
  • Fan can be installed with zip-ties, pieces of foam wedged around it, etc.
  • Keep HDDs away from lower fan so they don't block airflow.
  • If you use PWM fans their speed can be controlled by PWM signal from CPU fan header with a PWM splitter with PSU power connecter. This way case intake will speed up and slow down same as CPU cooler fans do. ;)

  • Here's a guide to how it works

  • Removing all unused PCI slot covers usually helps too.

I've taken a quick measurement and it appears I have around 115mm in width for a heatsink leaving 5mm between this measurement and the memory. Unless, of course the heatsink sits higher than the top of the memory.
