are they any good?

i sit a 17inch laptop on my lap. when i use it for gaming it gets very hot and the fans are running at full tilt constantly.
is a cooling pad the answer, or are they too awkward for lap use?

You're probably blocking the cooling vents on the bottom on the laptop which would explain why it gets hot. You need something to lift it above your legs so air can get in.

They certainly can help, but I suppose it depends on how many vents the laptop has.
I used to use one to cool a router that got screaming hot in the summer, but that was well vented. Even a very moderate breeze cooled it a lot.
The pads I tried (not many) I thought were fairly poor for the money, but they did the job. I would not like to balance one on my knee, though.
These days I use a little plinth I made myself with a Noctua fan in it and a dedicated PSU. It's a lot quieter and should last longer. The fan barely turns (I run it at half it's normal voltage), but it knocks 20 degrees off the router's temperature.

They are just about OK, but I (who am a cooling nut) would probably try a cooling pad. Get those temps down by 20 degrees and it's going to hopefully last a lot longer!

I would look into those fan curves. That does seem a bit toasty.
I got a helios 300 with an i7 9750 and leaving fan curve on auto coubwould be 90plus.. but I made sure fans on max (I play with head phones) when gaming. Plus cooling pad. Cpu doesn't go above 85c.
