Cooling PC the cheap way

Well today I was bored and noticed my desk is around the same height has the window. So I now have my pc on the desk facing towards the window. Temps have dropped a good 5-10c. Desk + Window height = Profit. Pic for good measure:

I hope u have good filters as u can expect dust, spiders and fly's near summer time.

Surely having the hot air rising from the radiator will not do your temps any good!

Maybe he has 480 SLI and the PC is the radiator ;)

Tbh I need to go out and buy a proper desk. This was sort of a bodge job when my old one snapped.

Surely this 'desk' is just turned around the wrong way. The nice clean edge is probably the other side. Would still look terrible but at least you could stop catching your clothes on the exposed chipboard.

As a cooling solution in Winter it may have some merit but it's not going to help things come May or June.

Why not go for the ultimate cooling solution and dangle your rig out of the window?

Depends on location, haven't seen a 'summer' for the best part of 4 years :p

My setup is also near a window (albeit under the window) when the window is open I've noticed especially my GPU temps drop quite significantly in the winter months, windows open most of the time durring the summer to no real gain or disadvantage, out of the way of direct sunlight while getting the fresh air it needs :D

The desk is actually a stripped out set of draws, no one spot the runners, I'm guessing it is backwards as a temp setup so the front base didn't have to be removed to accommodate your chair, with the intent of putting it back together when you have a desk, or am I wrong? :P

Dust filters are a double edged sword really. They impede airflow slightly and never stop all the dust, especially if you are a smoker. That being said they do need cleaning out less often, I think they also increase air pressure and thus noise. probably only an issue with high volume jobbies.

As far as temps go, every now and then I set about a mission to get the lowest temps I can, then I realize I really don't care how hot it gets so long as she is nice and quiet, well ish.. bloody hx850 silent reviews my ass... So long as my CPU hovers around 60 when its overclocked I'm happy, it's very rare i have to turn up my gfx or cpu fans although a ported CS:GO map (de_dust)actually made my tired old 3870 artifact the other day... that was a very nice map though cant wait for the game to hit, not as sexfull as BF3 but a vast improvement to cs:s :D

Just upped vcore to 1.55v and phenom 2 955 is sitting at 4.2ghz 51c after gaming. Do I dare push higher. Leaving voltage at 1.55 though as this is safe max for air.

After gaming? what is it during gaming. If that's at 1.55vc at 100% cpu utilization that's pretty impressive temp wise. I would give yourself a 5-10 minute run with something like OCCT to see what is really happening with your temps, just to be on the safe side. If say you have C&Q enabled your temps will drop vastly as soon as it downclocks, it's like flicking a toggle switch in some cases and you will just loose 10c instantly.
