Cooling suggestions.

Hey, so I've had my 2500k on air at 4.2 summer/4.5 winter for yonks (asus axe, was less than £15 at the time, a bargain from ocuk) but the cpu warranty is about to end (3 years, sigh) so its time to ramp it up a bit.

I can boot into 5ghz (and beyond) and I can keep 4.8 stable on a cold winters day with an open case...

I don't care for liquid cooling, but I want to be able to hold 4.8 at > 85c on air.

Any suggestions?

How about at 5ghz, are there any coolers that will manage this with ease?

Thanks in advance.

(for the mumsnet readers, black and yellow are the colours of the base unit) :)

Budget, CPU clearance, RAM height, PCIe socket to center of CPU? Very helpful for determining if cooler will fit in your application. :D

Hey, thanks for your interest.

I think I'm more interested in knowing that the cooler will keep the cpu at 4.8 or 5ghz.

I can work around the rest, I have low profile and high profile ram to hand and an old, but well ventilated Shinobi case that needs throwing away or modding.

The shinobi has a stated 158mm clearance, but I'ld rather that did not limit getting the cpu clocked to target.

If modding fails then I'll worry about getting a case that fits the monstrosity when it comes to it.

Budget is bang for buck territory, I don't mind whacking a really high RPM bang for buck fan on a bang for buck heatsink etc.

Really I just want to get to 4.8 - 5ghz on air... because at 4.8 I can run ARMA 3 with full 200% super sampling (1080p) on ultra with great draw distances at over 60 fps (even on some MP servers) and, frankly it gives me a bit of a stiffy seeing the 290's at 99% load, heh :D

the first thing to do............ forget the cooler, you must get the case cooling right........ your case looks ok, but to get it just right make sure nothing is blocking the intake fans, i always move the hard drive cages out of the way

this gives you an idea, the upper fan blasts straight at the cooler.... my new pc is similar..... this set up means that your rig is flipping miles cooler than anything else around, these intake fans are twin 2300rpm 90cfm.

most trays come out easily, but if not they're usually pop-rivets, these come out easily too, all you need is a 4mm drill bit

Case, case cooling, and GPU / CPU coolers all need to work together. The object is to get coolest possible air to components. Doing this requires a case with more airflow than coolers can use and all heated air coming from components to exit case without mixing with case air. Here's a basic guide to optimizing case cooling.

I also recommend automatic speed control of case fans .. either using all PWM fans or a Phanteks PWM controlled 3-pin fan controller like supplied in their cases. They are now available or will be very soon.

Yeah, I'm up to date as to how it all works :)

If my system was not running at full cooling capacity... it would melt! Really!!!

:D

What air coolers will keep a 2500k at 5Ghz in an open bench during the summer time?

The rest I can deal with, trust me!

[famous last words]

well you're looking at the Phanteks style of multi-fan coolers... there's about 6 of them, other than this the Noctura tower cooler...........but i wouldn't trust an ordinary tower cooler to give you a stable 5.0 in the summer......... winter yes.

my new rig is interesting, but i'm not that happy with the 140mm corsairs, so i might try more powerful fans, i'm always messing around with fans and i've got my eye on those 120cfm Bitfenix ones

Top coolers are Thermalright Silver Arrow IB-E Extreme, Thermalright HR-22 with fans, Cryorig R1 Ultimate, Noctua NH-D15.

Only reason Silver Arrow IB-E Extreme is cooler is the "extreme" 2500rpm it's TY-143 fans run. They increase the cooling by about 8, but of course are louder .. about the same noise level as H100

i7 3820 @4.75GHz Temperature is Delta
Cooler Delta RPM RPM dBA Fans
H100 41c 2500 55 2x
SA SB-E 42c 1000 1300 38 TY-150 & TY-141
SA SB-E Extreme 34c 2500 56 2x TY-143

jump in to 3:40 for results

Silver Arrow SB-E and Silver Arrow IB-E perform pretty much the same. SA IB-E is offset to clear PCIe slot .. 68mm center CPU to left side of cooler versus 77mm for SA SB-E

Never used it on my 2500K, but I have a Prolimatech Black Genesis with a brace of Bitfenix 140mm Spectre Pro PWM fans- and it does a fantastic job with my 4770K at 4.7GHz. IC Diamond 24-carat for the thermal paste.

Looks good too, and the design means that even fairly tall RAM is not a problem.
Not cheap though...

SST HE01 is £44.99 performs better than NH-D14, but is also louder when fan is running above approx. 1300rpm For the price it's a great cooler.

Okay, minor update.

Manage to get a dark rock pro rev.3 from the MM (thanks again Chris).

It comes with an extra set of fan clips so I'm going to install it and see how an extra full power high pressure corsair fan does.

Will update when installed and stable as high as I can comfortably get it.

i'm running [email protected] on this but the black version. never gets above 72c even in a 30c room with dual gpu's folding in the case.

the Silver Arrow SB-E is good too but i keep that on my pentium g3258

Hey, that is stonking price/performance on that cooler Jumper, I would have gone for it is not for the MM find.

Results are in.
  • 5.0 cant get it intel burn test stable.
  • 4.9 cant get it intel burn test stable.
  • 4.8 IBT stable at 1.45v, 91c.
  • 4.7 IBT stable at 1.42v, 85c.

So it looks like I'm going to stick to 4.7 @ 85c for now. Not bad considering 3 year old ASUS thermal paste was used, hoho.

Prolimatech megahalems with 2 1900 rpm Noiseblocker fans and liquid metal tim, I think.
I still have my Megahalems and will keep it as long as I can mount it to new sockets.
Best cooler ever.
So far I used it on 3570k 4.7 and 4770k 4.4, both with nice temps.
