Cooling the core duo's?

Not too bad, but the push pin fitment is pants IMO.

Go water cooling, i picked up a second hand kit for peanuts and works a treat. My E6600 Overclocked to 3.2GHz does not pass 55C on load.

OBV there is better/more expensive kits out there mind, but im happy with it as it was about 50C IDLE using stock cooler at stock 2.4 GHz.

Depending on what chip i get, what's the heatsink of choice at the moment to keep the temps down while overclocked?

Standard heatsinks are not good for overclocking.

Best air coolers at the moment are Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme and Tuniq Tower 120 though you can not go wrong with a AC Pro 7 awesome value for money with its cooling ability.

Push pins are great. Really quick easy to get the heatsink on and off. From my experiance any way.

Mine's sat next to me. May come in handy as a paperweight. I found that after fitting the heatsink, the fins were interleaved with the fins on one of the board (Gigabyte DQ6) heatsinks, leaving no room to attach the fan - not without the intervention of tin snips, which I didn't fancy doing.

Total nightmare. My first and last build. Sweating heavily, I found myself effectively performing chest compressions on the pins, to get them to click. Terrified the board was going to crack. I'm convinced they're not 100% clicked and it's going to fall off any minute now. The non-pin variety of HSF are no good to me because of a large chunk of copper attached to the bottom of the board, which requires a fair bit of dismantling to remove. Again, not something I fancy.

I've reached the conclusion that of all the components, the HSF requires the most research and thought. Have to balance cooling ability against installation ease.

My E6320 @ 3.2 doesnt go over 43C loaded with Intel TAT, Orthos, F@H using 50% on both Cores while running WMP and talking on MSN. :)

Don;t forget the Scythe Ninja rev B. (no fan attached to heatsink)

Got mine fitted on my E6600 @ 3.15ghz and idle does around 40 and fully loaded 100% both cores (f@H and gaming at the same time) max's about 51 degrees.

Does help with the Antec 900 case blasting the air through the case etc!! :D

The push pins can be a pain in the arse to fit, but once done it works well.

How are you measuring those temps then? Seems very low, either somethings mis-reading, or you've got your comp in a fridge! :)

i've already burned out my last old gfx card, don't wanna go water cooling just yet, don't wanna see it all litrially explode in my face if it goes wrong.
but i'm running my d/c 6600 at stock speeds (2.4ghz) with 3 case fans at 23C idle/45 loaded core temp
wanna push it a little more though so i'm getting some pci fans to take out the heat for my gfx card and make the case a bit cooler.
but yeah anyone got any more reccomendations on heatsinks

As someone has already said, the best aircooling at the moment is the Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme, followed closely by the Tuniq Tower. I recently replaced the fan in my Tuniq with a Scythe S-Flex 1600rpm, and it's ultra quiet :D

I got my E6600 overclocked to 3.2GHz on air cooling, with a ThermalTake Blue Orb II which looks really cool seeing my whole case is done out with blue LEDs, temps are low too, in winter they were really low, in summer they're still not breaking 50C at full load - i did also use some arctic silver, which is probably helping by 2 or 3 degrees as well.... wicked chip they are :)

Know EXACTLY what you mean. After i took off my AC7 one day to give it a clean and to reapply some paste, i couldnt get the 4th clip to clip in properly. I eventually managed to bend the part that goes through the hole, so it never clipped in. Then the fan started to make an odd noise so i decided to buy a new AC7. 4th clip refused to clip in properly. On the way back down from Leeds to Kent, the AC7 managed to totally unclip itself and rattled around inside my case without me knowing until i set up my PC again. Nothing wrong with AC7 mind, its an excellent cooler when you get the clips in!

Im now using a Noctua U12F and im real happy with it.

Thanks for the advice guys, i've just been looking at some of the heatsinks mentioned in this thread. Jesus, the ninja and tuniq look like big heatsinks!

What's the best board/chip combo then? Ive also been looking at the geil memory that overclockers sell, ive got some in this overclocked machine and no problems with it. Reckon it'll be ok?
