Yay...1st post......z0mbi3 will be proud.....

Ok...heres the set-up.....

AMD 64 x2 4400+ with stock cooler....
Lanparty UT nf4 ultra-d mobo....
Geforce 8800 GTX

Can anyone point me in the direction of the best cooling for that CPU...and tell me if there is any better way to cool the chipset which is sitting right under the 8800 and getting no air...

cheap option - arctic 64
expensive options - scythe ninja/tuniq tower

to get a bit of extra air on the chipset, just grab an extra case fan, low RPM 80mm best bet and point it at chipset, cable tie it onto any part of the case thats nearby

Got a jeantech appolo case with 2 80mm fans nearby anyway....

oh thought of one thing, if your really bothered about it and your boards SLi, use the Gcard in the second pci-e slot? then it would not cover the chipset

lol......*** the hell posessed DFI to stick the chipset there....it gets no air at all....

Chipset temperature is fine unless im overerclocking...

Im jus wondering if a new mobo is in order or if i could squeeze a waterblock and some tubing in there....

New mobo me thinks....

it can definately be done easily, but what mobo is it exactly? i seem to remember some DFI's will only run second slot as 8* not true 16*, even if your only using one card, i know running at 8* doesnt affect my x1900xt, as it does not saturate 8* bandwidth, nevermind 16*, but i think 8800 may saturate more than 8* so if it does run only at 8* you may limit your card slightly, which is obviously no good! :D

Only 1 does. Can't comment on how much the other would bottleneck, if at all.

With regards to the chipset, when you say it's getting no air, what is the actual temp? The end of my x1900 blocks the chipset fan exactly as yours does. While I can't quote temperatures mine has never been a problem. As long as it's operating some where within the quoted temps on the bios fan control page it should be fine.

What are your CPU temps, and how are you going about puting on thermal paste? You'd do fine with either the freezer 64 or an xp120 and a nice big fan.

Nuff said.

hmm checked out dfi-street, im pretty sure its 8* max, you could swap it and see if there is any performance drop, im not certain it will definately saturate 8* bandwidth, tbh if there is a drop, it may be so small that its still worthwhile so that you can increase the overclock on the cpu

also dont forget pci bandwidth = pci clock * pci lanes, so increasing the clock from 100 to say 120 would give you 20% extra bandwidth for graphics card, which would be a way round it only being 8* as you would have the equivelant bandwidth of 9.5*
most dfi mobo's will easily do 120mhz on the pci-e bus

Nah....i understand you.....

Chipset was hitting 51 degrees C after only a 400mhz overcock....at idle.....

Crashed while performng a 3dmark06 benchmark....

It's not crashing because of the of the chipset temperature though.

Tbh I think you should leave the chipset well alone, get yourself an aftermarket cpu cooler and just start overclocking.

xp-120 4tw.

no way, 120 4TL these days.

i bought an arctic pro 64 for a third of the cost of my xp120 and it does a better and quieter job than my 120 ever did, heat pipes are the way to go they really do have such an increadible effect

arctic pro 64/scythe ninja/tuniq = 4TW
