hi all

i have an antec 900 and im sure airflow isnt the problem but never know...

my graphics card seems to run hot every now n again and it got me thinking yes its a 9800gt, its supposed to run hot
but my psu is below it blowing ait up straight at the graphics card could this be causing a major diference in gpu operating temps?

if so would sticking a fan onto the spare slot on the side pannel of the case do any good? if so do i have it as a push or pull fan? side fans always confused me.. lol

oh an while im here anyone know what tmpin2 monitors on cpu-id hardware monitor pro? occasionaly spikes to 70+ for a second or 2 then drops for another few hours... not sure if its a bug or what, but after checking temps with aida64 i worked out what the rest are but tmpin2 just... i have no idea  lol

Sticking a side fan on might make a little difference, but realistically, two fans blowing against each other = problem. If possible, move the card into a slot farther away from the PSU. The Antec cases are all the same really, bottom psu slot is a nightmare vs gpus.

Only real solution is to move the card further away, water cool the gpu, or leave the case side off. That air isn't going anywhere, and most side fans aren't going to solve the issue. At least this way you'd have more space for it to go bye bye into. Could try a side exhaust fan aswell, may lower temps a bit. Either way, it's a bummer. :(

I've seen a few complaints about AMD chips reporting temps wrong with Cpu-id. Wouldn't worry about it, aida64 and RealTemp are usually better anyway.

I am sure the psu will be pulling air, not blowing onto the gpu.

If there is a vent under the psu, i would turn it over so it is drawing air from outside of the case.

ive figured out tmpin0 is motherboard temp n tmpin1 is the cpu itself (not the cores)

both programs report same temps anyways for those

its just that last tmpin2... no idea what its monitoring google wasnt so informative neither

i was thinking an exhaust fan as im thinking heat is building up there..

although the metal plates that cover the expansion slots on the case have vents in them (the ones that are there you remove before putting a card in) so maybe an intake might help push air out those n blow cooler air directly into gpu's intake

freddie i havent checked in a while n cant remember but i dont think my case has a vent under the psu, fairly sure it doesnt, but putting my hand at the back of the psu i dont feel much airflow.. maybe a slight breeze onto my hand from psu so couldnt tell if its exhausting aitr or bringing it in guess ill have to open my case n stick my hand above the psu fan inside the case n find out :P

Virtually all psu will draw air out of the case and exhaust out the back.

What temp does your card go upto?

well currently idling at 48-50C with fan at 100%...

usualy while gaming it shoots to 67-73C n this is were it goes weird
the gpu itself for some reason then drops fan back to auto controll (which doesnt like to go higher than 35%) so if i dont notice it it has and does hit 115C... but yea 48-50 while idling cant be right can it? ive not long taked the card out dusted it and even reaplied thermal paste (used the zalman stuff that comes with my cpu cooler) at the time i noticed a 1-2C drop in temps.. obvs something aint right

What temps does the gpu idle with the fan on auto, 50c ~ is quite good my 580 is around the 60c ~ mark.

I am not sure why the fan does not increase on auto, I assume your running the latest driver from Nvidia.

Buy two of these, get one, take the metal bar of and turn it round so when installed they sit back to back. One will extract the air from your PSU straight out and the other will extract the air from your GPU straight out of the case.

Problem solved.

well i dropped it to auto left pc idling n went to make a brew
(idled for 5-10mins gpu load 0-1% video load 3% mem controller load 3%)

temps around 60C, last time i checked 60C idling is pretty hot for a gpu?

n yes latest drivers, its been the same since i got it i think i just didnt really notice from not knowing much :P

from some googling on the matter a while back i saw a few threads saying aparently its a bug in the cards bios.. wouldnt wanna fiddle with it still half ayear warranty left although not sure i wanna pay to ship it to france for rma as it was only £100... prolly worth what 30 now? lmao

thought this would help... lol

+1

That's a really good idea!

How do you install them back to back like that though?

I have one of these, and it makes very little difference installed on its own.
