Ill be going out to Copenhagen for 5 days for business between sat or sunday and a friday

im going to ask local contacts for recommended hotels near 2500 Valby area i think,

Anyone know what I can look around if i get some spare time?

i think some evenings i will be working late (tuesday and wed) i will be working late, but hopefully i can have a look around, either thursday evening or some of sun/monday eve

The big street food market at Refen is worth the water bus journey and open till late if you have a free evening. There's also WarPigs if you want beer and meat - raaar!

There's a few companies offering boat trips but if you have a travel pass, you can see a fair bit using the water busses.

Nyhavn is pretty well known, so a nice place for a walk in the evening / night and maybe get an ice cream. The restaurants along the quay were always busy but we didn't eat in any of them (tourist traps perhaps - I'm sure your local colleagues will know). Torvehallerne has a good mixed market with produce and food stalls but IIRC, it doesn't stay open as late. More food options at Broens food market which is just over the pedesterian bridge from Nyhavn.

We had a very good meal at Komplet, though the wine wasn't cheap (even for house wine) - https://www.restaurantkomplet.dk/en

If you don't want breakfast at your hotel, the Lagkagehuset bakeries do some fabulous pastries.

If you are pushed and only have time to see a few sights, then (commuting from Valby) I'd suggest starting near Tivoli Gardens/Radhuspladsen.

You can do a very pleasant walking loop that will take you past the Glyptotek (art and sculpture museum - excellent), Danish Architecture Centre and onto Slotsholmen island. Within Slotsholmen you have the Krigsmuseet (military museum) and Christiansborg Palace. Slotsholmen adjoins Nyhavn, the most scenic area. From Nyhavn, carry on up the waterside past Amalienborg Palace, up to the famous Little Mermaid statue. Then wander through the Kastellet (17th century fortress - free, quiet). The loop back will take you through Rosenborg Palace's gardens, and parts of the old town including the Rundetaarn tower.

From Tivoli to the Kastellet, one-way, is probably around 50m-1hr slow walk. If you have any spare time, you have a lot of options to choose from.
  • Something different? Near Refshaleoen and the Refen food market @#Chri5# mentioned, there's an all-weather ski slope (CopenHill).
  • If you have a day off, consider a trip outside of the city. There are loads of interesting places you can get to within 30mins-1hr on the train and combine, such as Helsingor (Kronborg Palace) and Hillerod (Frederiksborg Palace), or Roskilde (Vikings!)
Either way, Copenhagen really is a lovely city to walk/transport around.

I live in Copenhagen, my office is in Carlsberg Byen which isn't far from Valby. It's a nice enough area to wander around in the evening. Public transport is very good, from Valby s-train station it would only take 10-15 mins to get to the city centre, so you don't necessarily need to stay around your hotel location. The absolute best way to see Copenhagen is with a bike though, you can see so much more and just jump off when you see something worth exploring more.

If you want to remain near Valby you could go for a walk through Søndermarken and Frederiksberg Have, the zoo and an old palace is also between the two. The Carlsberg Byen area next door also has the Carlsberg elephant gate/statues that tourists seem to love, and the Carlsberg brewery if you're into that. Obviously most of the sights are in the city centre though.

The posts above mentioned most of the main tourist sights to see. As expected living here, personally I think the best bits of Copenhagen are away from the tourist sights, but you have to visit them as a first timer. If you only have one or two days/evenings to explore, from Valby I'd suggest getting the s-train in to central station and doing a counter clockwise walk around the city and harbour, or get off at Norreport station and going clockwise - basically what Flaevius mentioned above. Most tourist things are pretty much inside the same area, some of them worth seeing (and grouped by closeness):

  • Get off train at Norreport station
  • Torvehallerne, Rundetaarn, Strøget
  • Rosenborg Slot & Kongens Have
  • Marmokirken, Amalienborg
    • You could also walk out to Kastellet, Gefion fountain and the little mermaid here, but IMO they're not that exciting
  • Ofelia Plads (mostly for being next to the harbour and the view across to the opera house), Nyhavn, Kongens Nytorv
    • You could also walk across Inderhavnsbroen (bridge) to the outside street eats area for a beer and food (it's a mini Reffen)
    • You could then continue on through the canals of Christianshavn, and back across Knippelsbro (bridge)
  • Gammel strand, Christiansborg slot and some of those mentioned above - slotsholmen, krigsmuseet and the architecture centre
  • Radhuspladsen, Tivoli area
  • Get on train at central station
Or reverse to go counter clockwise.

If you want to get out of the city centre itself, of the places not mentioned, Faelledparken is nice, the five lakes and Dronning Louises Bro are nice, Vesterbro/Kødbyen, and some of the neighbours and streets in Østerbro, Nørrebro and Frederiksberg C are nice. You could see all of those with a bike. Reffen is nice for a beer and food in the sun, but it's pretty far I think if you only have an evening or two and no bike. Renting a goboat and floating around the harbour with a few beers is also nice, but probably a bit boring on your own.

A little further away, Amager Strandpark for the beach, Nordhavn, and Flaevius noted some even further away like Helsingør, Hillerød and Roskilde, and I'd add Dyrehavn (get off at Klampenborg train station) if you fancy a walk through the forest.

+1 for the Lagkagehuset and Warpigs mentions as well

Nice cheers all. It will be food more than anything maybe with one beer in the evenings that I can get out as I have a busy week in work but hoping to have a look around whilst I'm walking about. I'll try and get a selfie on the bridge with the coloured buildings behind .

Flight / travel and accommodation booked going out not this Sunday but Sunday after. Heathrow flying with sas

Don't forget to go to the little mermaid and watch the Chinese and Russia tourists fight over posing pictures.
Russians are particularly annoying.

thumbs up

I will see how much effort it takes me to have my wallet raped

Luckily expenses to the rescue

If you head over to War Pigs, go next door to the ice cream place - best ice cream I've ever had. The whole area is called the Meat Packers district, highly recommend it. We went in August last year for my 40th, great fun had by all - Copenhagen is just better in every way vs the UK.

I've been a few times, the hippie place is quite cool for a walk about. Stinks of weed.

Freetown Christiania

It really not that great proper weirdos in that area and don't carry a camera there they get aggressive and will physically touch you.

The signs for no cameras are small aswell around.

Was fine when I walked around, yeah full of weirdos etc but I felt safe. Was interesting to see, was definitely different than the usual.

It's a really disappointing statue too.
I was about to say this!
Ask any local and they'll tell you not bother, it's tiny.
I presume you won't have a day to yourself? Otherwise I'd recommend getting the train up to Helsingør to see Hamlet's castle (Kronborg), getting the ferry to Helsingborg (Sweden) than a train down the other coast to Malmo, and finally over the bridge back to Copenhagen.
It's a great day trip to see a bit of both coastlines.

Russians are particularly annoying.

I saw a man clearly on a stag do dressed in lingerie climb over it (slipped into the sea in the process) in order to kiss it.
