Copperhead+not smooth movement

Just got a replacement copperhead after the old one bust and I still experience massive amounts of skipping. I've used both a razer mat and a roccat gaming mat and the mouse just doesn't run smoothly across the surfaces. This really wound me up after spending £20+ on mouse mats to find that razers own mat does not work well with their mice.

What is the best surface to run one of these mice on?

Tarmac, where hopefully a car will run over it and force you to buy a better mouse

Probably is the best option, works perfectly on my wooden desk but I much prefer the feel of a mat yet there are times that I find it refusing to move diagonally due to the mat.

Had mine for a year working fine on my exact mat until the right button decided to start playing up so RMA'd it and sold the new one for £30 meaning a Kone only cost me £20.

Whats the kone like? I could have done the same thing instead of wasting cash on mats.
