Cops shooting unarmed man

Totally insane, he at least has been arrested and I believe he faces upto 20 years in jail.

At no point does he look like he's going for a gun, he's just complying. Then he still fires when he's got his hands in the air.
That cop needs to be strung up.
If you don't want them to lean into the car, then don't ask for his license.

Why bring race into it?

Because race probably played a part in the policeman being so twitchy with his gun..

I'm surprised the man is still alive TBH. Cop was a bad shot, from such a close distance.

Actually surprised the whole petrol station didn't explode ! Who in their right mind fires off shots in a petrol station ?

I understand the American Police are having a rather rough time at the moment.

They keep shooting people for what appears to be little or no reason.

Just glad we don't have every bobby with a 9mm walking around tbh.

Clearly the same person who fires off shots at an unarmed civilian :)

Given that fact, it makes the colour of the person being shot irrelevant really.

Just poor policing and the fact the man was black is neither here nor there.

Wow, talk about over-reaction. He didn't dive in to the car, the policeman made the decision he was going for a gun and decided he would shoot to kill. Cop is lucky he is a bad shot or that could be a homicide based charge. Given the bad publicity with police actions at present, I've got a feeling he will get hung out to dry by the police force.

This is the issue that a lot of people miss, that cop has only 1 chance to watch it, and only 1 chance to make a decision from what he sees.

He doesn't have the opportunity to decide after a couple of watch throughs.

Ridiculous. For a start he shouldn't just ask for a license if he's worried, secondly, he had his back to him and there was zero risk of being shot.

They also could pull the weapon and tell him to freeze. There was no need to run up and fire 3 shots at point blank. The cop aimed to kill instantly based on false information.

I work as a doctor, if I were to make such a bad judgement call that I killed someone through such negligence I'd be struck off from the GMC and face a prison sentence. I wouldn't see anyone lining up to defend me if that were to happen though. I guess the police must be the only ones with a tough job.....

Edited psst, I was commenting on the text before I watched the video. I watched it, that can't be defended and was just ridiculous.

Especially after asking him to get something from inside his car.

Race is, sadly, almost certainly relevant.

Black people in America (and here, in fact) are significantly more likely to be pulled over in the first place (for driving without a seat-belt on a petrol forecourt, in this case - is that even illegal?), and are more likely to be shot - we need to question whether police carry a heavier presumption of guilt/danger when faced with a black person over white.

There is also a growing awareness of this problem, internationally, and it is a topical issue - the relationship of ethnicity to police action. It's probably relevant enough to include this detail in the thread title.

And then he carries on shooting when the guy's hands are up.

The cop's a moron and i'm glad he got fired and then arrested. Hope he's away for a looong time.

Indeed. I think the title needs amending.

Sorry if i'm not politically correct. But the world is what the world is. In America, and well the UK too, predominately black areas are subject to much higher crime. I wish it wasn't that way. But factually it is.

I'm sure the cop took on this probability into mind when he decided that this 'black' man was reaching for a weapon. This 'white' cop was clearly on edge. I'm sure if he would have pulled me up I would hazard a guess that there was less likely chance that I would have been shot.. I could be wrong, but he profiled this black man probably because he was black, and well the rest is clear in the video.

Just to point it out: we don't know under what assumption the ex-officer pulled over the suspect/victim. If he believed he was armed and dangerous, this would certainly have framed his perspective and thus response.
