Copy primary HDD1 to secondary HDD2

I have two HDD in my computer.

HDD 1 = My current OS disk
HDD 2 = Blank formatted disk

I want HDD2 to be my primary HDD and HDD1 to be my storage HDD.

What is the easiest way to do this?

Clone HDD 1 to HDD 2 using the free trial of Acronis True Image, then format HDD 1. Job done

Would this work if I were to get an SSD? (having backed up everything other than the OS on an external drive)

Yes providing the SSD has enough capacity. You should also ensure you enable AHCI in the BIOS and disable disk defrag after cloning the HDD to the SSD however. Remember this

after cloning, do I just restart the computer and the boot menu will have two options? Boot from new HDD or old HDD?
