Hi,

I have upgraded to Vista from XP Pro.
The new PC has all new componants, including HDD's

So in order to cut & paste my files from my old Sata1 HDD on to my new Vista PC I installed the HDD on the MoBo. So far so good !
I was Cutting & pasting files from the partion on the Sata! XP HDD with no problems.
How ever when I came to cut & paste from the old C drive ong the Sata1 HDD, the My Documents folder. I was denied access by Vista, ' I currently do not have access to this folder' message keeps popping up ! ! ! !
arrrrr

How do I turn this annoying function off or get access to these files ! ?

Many thanks

You have to gain access rights, I think there is a right click options, then go into the folder properties. not a 100% certain as the only time I've had to transfer files is over a network between the two OS's. Sorry I could be of more help.

Edit:
# In Windows Explorer window, locate the files or folders that you want to take ownership and grant access permissions.
# Right click on the file or directory.
# Click on “Properties” on the right click menu.
# Click on “Security” tab.
# Click on “Advanced” button at the bottom.
# In Advanced Security Settings dialog window, click on “Owner” tab.
# Here you will be able to see current owner (i.e. TrustedInstaller).
# To take ownership of the object, click on the Edit button. Give permission to UAC. Then highlight the user name in the “Change owner to” box that you want to assign as the owner for the object. Click “OK” to finish the process.
# Back in Advanced Security Settings window, you will see the current owner has changed to the user you just selected.
# Click “OK” button to exit this window.
# Click “OK” again to exit completely from the Properties window.
# Repeat step 1 to 4 to open the object’s Properties window again.
# Back in object’s Properties window, click on Edit button, and confirm the UAC elevation request.
# Highlight the Administrators in the “Group or user names” box. If the user ID or group that you want to manage the permissions for the object doesn’t exist, click on “Add” button, and type in the user name or group name desired into the “Enter object names to select” box, and finish off by clicking on “OK”.
# In the Permissions for Administrators box below (or any other user name or group name you chose), click on “Full Control” under the “Allow” column to assign full access rights control permissions to Administrators group.
# Click “OK” twice when done.

Lengthy but if it works, it works :)

Hi,

I have had some success with the above info. However Vista is really starting to p*ss me off. As I can not seem to move some files. I do the above as per Pulse's instructions. Though the folder / or file does seem to get up dated with the new user !
Is there any way I can get around this slow process of copying over the folders & files ! ?

many thanks

It is not the OS's fault you didn't prepare your data correctly for migration :).

Before when I have done upgrades it has always been with using XP Pro OS.

What must I have done to prepare the files ! ?

The only problem was I did sell my then current PC bits before I started the rebuild.
