I have an ancient linux box that I need to lift a directory off and take it to any windows PC. I cannot for the life of me remember where to start, the most we've done with this box in the past 2 years is switch it on when the power went off :-P

it's running KDE if that helps! :D

I know samba is running on it as I started it earlier. It hosts part of the intranet (about 11Mb worth) it's an ANCIENT box, I dont even think it's got USB. i've no idea why they ever used it to be honest!

the part of the site it hosts is up and running, I can ping it but I can't connect to it by name or IP from any windows based PC.

Are you sure it doesn't have USB? My 80586 machine had USB ports in about 1997.

Failing that, rar it into 1.4 MiB pieces and put it on a floppy one part at a time.

Alternatively, rar or zip it up and upload it to an upload site. You could also send it in an email to yourself.

ah there is a single USB port at the back of it, was covered by a gigantic ball of fluff lol I'll have a go at lifting it off with a usb lacie drive tomorrow, guessing I might have to plug it in before I boot i but fingers crossed!

off home, one of the benefits of being my own boss at the moment :D

I would have thought the easiest way would be to use samba on the linux machine and just lift the files across the network ?

are you sure of the ip details etc if you are unable to ping it on the network?

If its running a webserver why not move the files into the webdirectory then download them over the network by browsing to the address. Web directory in linux is usually /var/www/

lol great minds! I came in this morning (its a lot cooler today) RAR'd them, stuck it in the WWW folder and downloaded it. took about 5mins and I've NO IDEA why I didn't think of that yesterday!

cheers guys ! :D
