Hi guys.

Just looking for some more information on this. I have a Folder which needs moving onto a new server. Usually for any other folders i would File transfer it over, then again to amend any files changed before the transfer takes place. This folder has loads of other folders with different permissions and share names which i would ideally like to keep without having to copy each one myself. Firstly is there a way of doing this? Will the shared server URL amend with the new name automatically?

Thanks :)

The free (from MS) File Server Migration Toolkit will preserve permissions.

If you have nested shares, you probably need to follow this tweek to ensure the shares don't get renamed.

I had to do this move files from a windows box to a EMC SAN and used EMCCopy to do this retaining permissions. I am sure you can use same tool when moving files between Windows servers/shares.

If both servers are Windows you could make use of DFSR.
At the same time if you created a DFS Link you could migrate the data again in the future without having users needing to know the new location due to the paths being hidden behind the link.

+1 for DFS.

Another way would be to do a back up and a restore (always good to know the backups work anyway)
