Hi All,

Can anyone tell me about the Copyright Licensing Agency (www.cla.co.uk)?
Are they actually a legal/government appointed organisation?
Or are they a bit like FAST - all scarey emails but no real world bite at all?

We've just had some email correspondence from them saying that we don't currently hold a CLA license and that from a questionaire we filled in we probably require one.

Anyone else had any dealings with these guys?

No, at the bottom it is clearly marked out as a ltd company

The Copyright Licensing Agency Ltd

I'm not sure why the government would run an arm as a ltd company, unless they were making a **** load of money from it somehow.

But alas, I haven't the foggiest.

Oh they aren't backwards coming forward.
They are trying to sell us a CLA license.
I'm just trying to decide under who's authority they can sell me a license and what the likely outcome will be if I tell them to politely go away.

With FAST for example I giggle at their email and tell them we're not interested.
I then get another stern email telling me about the penalties for not having the correct software licenses.
I then finally tell them I'm not interested in the products they are selling me and if they have any information to say we're not license legal they should persue it....last I hear of them.

Hopefully CLA are going to be just as easy.

Copyright licencing agency run by copyright holders in line with the copyright, design and patents act.

They are trying to sell you something, effectively either a licence to copy or insurance against copyright infringement (depending on how you look at it).

They have no additional powers compared to other copyright holders.

Who are you and what is your business.

That will give you the answer as to why they think you need a license.

Well that's just it.
The questionaire on their website always seems to give the answer "Yer - you probably need one" :)

It asks silly questions like:

Do you have access to photocopiers.
Do staff have unrestricted internet access.

I've passed it up to legal and I'll let them decide - outside of IT's remit I feel.

Indeed, the only real weapon in their arsenal is the Anton Piller order (which in and of itself is a bit scary) - but to get one there needs be very strong evidence of wrongdoing.
