Ok,

I've been looking at properties and notices that houses in Corby and Wellingborough are particularly cheap (i.e 100,000 for 2-3 bed semi-detached or better).

I initially assumed that there must be something wrong with the area but couldn't confirm it with anyone I know. I do understand that usually those properties are within a good distance from the train-station (4-7 miles) and it takes 1h to get to London (or thereabout) with a train, so that's a put-off for many people who work in London. Nonetheless the price-ranges are very appealing.

Anyone got any tips/info on areas on these two places? Anything I should look out for?

Definitely no to Corby, its full of Scottish ex Steel Workers who hates everything and everyone. They have just done a major redevelopment of the town centre, but give it a year and the locals will have trashed it down again.

NO.

Wow, some pretty strong comments there! So I guess Corby is out of the question.

What about Wellingborough then?

I went to Corby once. Never again.

Picture the Jeremy Kyle show exploding all over an ugly 70s concrete town.

Corby is no where near as bad as its reputation, its got much much better over the last few years.
The town center has pretty much been leveled and rebuilt so its all brand new and full of the sort of shops you need plus a brand new olympic swimming pool and gym complex, along with the fact theres a lot of building taking the town outwards as well providing new clubs pubs and things.
The Chavs do exisit just like any other place in the UK but their not a major problem.
The best part about the place is about how close it is to some lovely countryside which I really miss when Im up in Wolves.
All in all I think that now is a good time to buy in Corby as the place is only going to improve more with house prices rising.
And from what other people have said it sounds like I'm the only one who has actual experience of living there at the moment and not just what I've heard or seen from a quick visit

kinda mixed reviews, it seems pritty modern, on google maps it seems okish but some areas are chavvy :D

Could you please suggest which are the best areas in Corby and which ones to avoid, as you seem to have real experience of the place.

Also, regarding to chavs etc, are the problems focused on the city centre or is it all around in general?

The only real places I wouldnt choose to live in are the big estates such as the Aaron, the lincolin, danesholme but thats as much to do with the fact I wouldnt want to live on top of people as it is to do with the fact they can be a little bit shifty.
Great Oakly is a nice area along with the poppy feilds housing estate on the outskirts of town, The shire lodge area is also quite quiet.
The best rule of thumb when it comes to corby is if your going to get problems in an area you will be able to tell as soon as you see it judging by the general condition of the houses and things, if the place looks pleasent then it is.
The Chavs will be around the town center at the weekends but to be honest their normally quite happy amusing each other, and the only place their really an issue is around the estates I mentioned earlier.
You will notice when walking around that most kids will be hanging around in groups much more than Ive noticed anywhere else but for the most part their not an issue its just the way they are round here.

There's a reason properties are cheap there: no-one wants to live in either. It's a good safe rule for any part of the country - price reflects desirability. The main issue for both is lack of higher-level employment, although Corby is better than it was when the steel plant closed. Still mostly low-pay service jobs though.

My brother lived there for years and I have full experience of the low quality of the place and of the residents, its a dead end.

Corby is a big no from what i've heard! I live in Wellingborough and there are some nice parts and some rough parts but in the main it's ok. As you say houses are very cheap!

There are several estates that look ok, there is Wilby Way estate, some Parts of Kingsway (the Royal names part), Gleneagles.

Queensway is one area to avoid.

Lived in Gleneagles for a short while before moving to Northampton. Gleneagles was ok ish. Wellingborough isn't great but its better then Corby. that is one hell of a horrid place to go.....

Isn't Corby where there are loads of kids with no fingers because of some toxic waste leak? :p

Probably why the houses are cheap

Okay, Imagine the world after a nuclear war. Then look at Corby. The post-nuclear war world is a more habitable, and by far much safer and pleasent place to be. Unless you happen to like being around people that make zombies look like respectable, friendly citizens. Wellingborough's not much better.
