Hopefully this is the right sub-forum, couldn't find a 'Peripheral' section!

I have a desktop back home and use a laptop whilst at University. Recently I've been using CAD software and have found using a touchpad a little frustrating and to be slowing me down (despite having a fast pointer speed).

With is being christmas and all I though I'd treat myself to a nice mouse. The last mouse I used was a Microsoft keyboard/mouse combination thing and I really liked the shape of that and found ergonomically it was quite good. Despite getting a little sweaty/slipery occasionally.

Also what I was wondering was if it's possible to assign functions to buttons on a mouse to correspond with itunes? Like skip foward/back through songs and play/pause?

I'd like to know this to save me forking out a bit extra for a mouse with spare buttons to then find they're useless for my needs!

Anybody care to recommend a good mouse? and let me know which brand/models should be avoided?

Thanks in advance,

Benny C

Edit: I don't really have a preference as to corded/wireless. And as for budget, around £50 would be good, ideally less but if it's worth the extra I don't mind.

The Roccat Kone has two thumb buttons, the scross wheel works like every other scrollwheel PLUS left and right toggle.
3200 DPI, changable weights for comfort and feel, and a total of 10 buttons!!!

All buttons re assignable to whatever you like, and it even allows custom lighting patterns.
A VERY nice mouse with change from £50 ;)

The CoolerMaster Sentinel 5600 DPI mouse is just fantastic. I know it's billed as a gaiming mouse but it 'feels' great (I moved form the MS mouse too - this is similar but much better slightly rubberized feel-no sweaty palms), has 5 programmable buttons (as well as left/right of course) and 5 profiles. Each profile name will appear in the small screen on the mouse and each can have it's own colour - so the coloured lights aren't just for show! The DPI/sensitivity can be adjusted way beyond useful purposes on the fly

I use it for some gaming but use it mostly for photoshop and lightroom but even have a profile for general browsing, you can assign buttons to any keystroke. You can also write/assign macros or keystroke combinations. Also, profiles are stored in the mouse, so no bloatware on your PC. It's simply a very high quality well thought out bit of kit.

Assigning mouse buttons to do cad functions is more difficult than I expect it to be, at least I haven't managed it yet. Otherwise its a good plan, 3D work on a touch pad is horrible.

Had my Microsoft / Razer Habu for a couple years now and never looked at another mouse since. It honestly feels like a glove.

The button assigning isn't for the CAD program, just general daily functions :) Ordered the Kone the other night. Will let you know how I get on.

I've started setting up the mouse but have noticed the left and right clicks are switched round. I can sort this via the windows control panel mouse config window. But whenever I change something and click 'apply' in the Roccat config window it reverts back. I can't see anyway to assign functions to the two main buttons. Anybody come accross this before? or am I being blind?

Have updated software/firmware and think it might be sorted. Has anybody had problems getting the weights to stay in the bottom. 2 stay in and 2 dont!

That's why you should buy only and only logitech G5 or G9 mice series : ).

And regarding the reverted stuff... no idea but is there any software for the mouse itself like setpoint for logitechs where you can program all your buttons? Should be fixable in there, and make sure you put that software on autostartup as well so the settings load each time you restart.

Always stick with Logitech for mice. They are simply the best mice available, and the customer service is gold plated.

The MX1100 is an instant winner with me and my big hands.
