Hi all here,

I'm gonna be building a high-end system for a friend who want it to be Core 2 based (when it comes out of course). His other concern is that his new computer be future-proof, including support for EFI booting that'll follow in Vista SP1. The main question is: which motherboards support the EFI technology? Are they all Intel 945/955/975 chipset based? Do the new nForce 500 series chipsets support EFI too? Or is EFI support determined by individual motherboard models?

On the same topic: Is EFI supported in any sort of AMD-based system (perhaps in the Socket AM2?)

Thanks in advance for any pointers, advice or snippets of info. :)

vista sp1?

come back sometime end of next year......

your friend needs to get his head out of the future, efi wont be used for ages to come, and vista no sp hasnt even come out yet and is lightly to come out next year...
and core 2 isnt comming out for a few months either.

Ok then, I already know that EFI won't actually be around for a while. I just wanted to know which chipsets would have the capability to support it in the future when the time comes (through a firmware upgrade). The new Intel chips already do support it, but does nVidia's chips support it as well?

nobody knows, maybe when Vista appears we will find out but note adding EFI to an OS is a major add-on and I dont think a service pack would do it. You are changing the way the OS and BIOS work and interact with each other, IMO it would require a new install with for example an EFI edition of Vista.

Following on from this - why can't mobo manufacturers just do what Apple have done? Make all their boards EFI and then "add-on" a BIOS through the CSL (I think it's that). This is how Apple Computers are able to Boot Camp Windows without a BIOS, isn't it?

And why do they still insist on slinging in old legacy ports like PS/2, Parallel and Serial. Does anybody worth their salt really bother with these anymore when they have been superseded by USB?

I use serial port on my server for UPS monitor. I have PS2 keyboard, my missus and I share a printer, she connects via parallel port, I use USB interface as the printer has both. So I guess I aint worth much salt :p

Yes there will be a time when PS2, serial and parallel are obsolete.
parallel and serial ports are disabled on my PC ;)

:D I knew there'd be at least one peep I'd upset with that comment! :D

I only included PS/2 because I just ordered myself a new USB keyboard from OcUK! :D
