I see Intel have taken the step of trying to render IDE hard drives obsolete with their Conroe chipsets. But are the other motherboard makers going to use a 3rd party IDE controller for hard drives like they are for IDE optical drives, or will I have to replace all my IDE hard drives with SATAs? My main hdd is SATA, but all my music and back-ups are on IDE drives

I have 2 old 200GB IDE HDs hooked up in my Gigabyte DS4 along with 2 SATA HDs as well. The IDE drives have to share the one port but they're working OK.

I use an external DVDRW.

You can get an IDE to SATA converter, but you'd have to google it.

Not just a matter of "trying" to render the old PATA controller redundant - there is no support for it in the 965/ICH8/R at all.

I've not yet seen a motherboard (either released or planned) that doesn't have a 3rd party IDE controller on it.
However there is nothing at all to say there has to be any - however it would take a very brave manufacturer to make one without.

I've just taken the plunge - I was already using SATA HD's so I've just bought the Samsung SATA DVD-RW drive and I'm replacing both my Plextor DVD-ROM and Pioneer DVD-RW drives with this one £25 unit.
So the only legacy device I still have is an old floppy drive and that will go as soon as Vista is finally released and that copes better with booting and reading drivers from USB devices.

I didn't realise SATA burners were so cheap. I'll maybe get one of them and hook my two PATAs upto the boards IDE channel.
