Core 2 Duo CPU temp

I have a core 2 duo 6300 processor with std Intel heatsink and fan in a Silverstone case as a HTPC. Initially I was getting around 45 deg CPU temp on idle, as opposed to around 38 deg from the 6600 in my desktop. I applied Antec Formula 5 compound but that only served to increase my temp to 49 - 50 deg, on idle. Any ideas how to sort this out please? The case temp is 38 deg.

might be worth reseating the heatsink and giving it all a good clean and applying some good arctic silver. If you can afford it get a better cooler, Scythe ninja will do the trick, keeps my E6600 about 28-30ish idle, 34 under load

I don't want to change the heatsink. Will the arctic silver 5 work OK with the std intel heatsink? I read somewhere that a silicon based product is better with a smooth based heatsink.

well I used arctic silver 5 on my ninja and its fine.

I took off the chipset heatsinks, cleaned those, and installed Ceramique on these (available from ocuk). I had read somewhere not to use arctic on these as its conductive and therefore maybe be easier to damage something if it slops around a bit ...., arctic is fine for the core though

I know its a pain changing/reseating the heatsink again and you have to be careful (and of course may damage things).......

I have no experience of the Antec Formula 5 compound, but I'd suggest a re-seat with AS5 or similar quality compound - not too much though!

With a case temp of 38c, and using an air cooler, you're not going to ever get below ambient don't forget, 40+ idle is the very best you can expect, despite what your onboard sensors might tell you!
