Hello Guys, I am new here, thought I would say hello. I need/want a little more performance from my 3 + year old Core 2 Duo based system so I went out and bought a Phenom 955 + motherboard, then felt guilty and cancelled the order. To be honest for what I do a Phenom 955 is more than overkill. My gaming is on the PS3 and the only thing I use the PC for is as a media server for streaming content to PS3 via PS3 media server, or I convert movies to VOB using MKV2VOB copy them over to the ps3 etc. On occassion I do a bit of photo editing too but that is it. I will be upgrading to Windows 7 and may get a few RTS games so would be nice to have a little more oomph!

My PC is still fine the way it is but I needed to spend money on something electrical so what I decided to do as a little project was to overlock the processor a little. My Asus motherboard is crap, an Asus P5-VD2-MX and will only overclock from 1.87GHZ to 1.997GHZ!! So a new Motherboard it is. I could have bought an expsensive motherboard but after reading a few things about the overclocking ability of the Gigabyte GA-G31M-ES2L decided it was fine for what I wanted, besides I wanted to keep things cheap as possible and I am not after a mega overclock.

I also bought a new Piano Black case and will buy an uprated cooler as well. I have to check the speed of my ram as from what I have read this can restrict potential when overclocking. I Have 3gb and am pretty sure it is 667mhz but due to my current motherboard it is running at 533mhz. A friend of mine has 1x 2gb 800mhz ram which he said he will give to me so hoping that it will be sufficient?

Once I get everything installed I will probably be asking some stupid questions should I get stuck.

Also, just curious, how compariable would a Core 2 Duo E6300 clocked to 3.20GHZ be if comparing to an E8400 and how high a clock would an an E6300 need to match or supass if that is possible?

Anyway sorry for the long post, thanks.

There are different models of E6300. I own the same one as you, and it doesn't overclock more than that regardless of motherboard - I have an Asus P5W DH Deluxe.

Have to say I have no problems with it at all though... currently running E6300 (2x1.8) with 9800GT playing EVE on High settings at 1920x1200.

Thanks

I have read some older articles from 2006-2007 and have seen the same processor clock to 3.7ghz, obviously using top components etc. If I can get it near 3.00Ghz then I will be more then chuffed. To be honest, as my current case is tatty looking and most of my USB's are are now broken (front and back) I wanted a new case (sadly :D) to match my other AV equipment! I then thought I may as well change the motherboard if I am going to change my case as everything needs to come out, then that got me thinking of a new CPU etc but I just settled on the motherboard.

For me, I know my computer is more than capable enough, just I would welcome the extra speed of an overclock as well as the challenge of tinkering.

Sorry to say you won't get anywhere near 3 GHZ with that board, to do that you would need a board capable of over 400 FSB.

Thanks

It would be ok with the newer model E6300 or an E5300 due to the higher multi.

I kind of thought that as the multipliers can not be changed unlike an extreme edition/black editition.

How high will the bus speed go as it is at 266mhz standard right?

By the way Merry Christmas. (I am at work still!!!)

Hey guys, I have installed the motherboard in the new case etc and had a go at overclocking. I have the bus speed set to 390mhz which gives a clock speed of 2.73GHZ. If I go any higher the system boots but resets back to standard values. I have loaded the CPU the and it it rmeains stable and does not get higher than 52 degrees with the standard cooler. I have not messed with CPU/RAM volatage or overclocked the ram so with a little advise from you guys I am sure to get her clocking a little higher. I am hoping to get her to 3.0GHZ.

Any Suggestions where to go now?

PS my ram is 667speed.
