hi,

ok i wanna give OC'ing a go and have a few questions.

Intel Core 2 Duo E6750
XFX GeForce 8800GTS 320MB
Crucial 2GB (2x1GB KIT) 667mhz
Gigabyte S775 Intel P35 GA P35C DS3R rev 2.0
550W PSU
windows xp home

1 - whats a safe OC for this cpu, anyone else here have one?

2 - my mobo has a CPU intelligent accelarator 2 (C.I.A.2) bios setting which seems to allow OC'ing without manually increasing the FBS. would i be as well using this feature or am i better doing it manually?

3 - id love someone to explain how ram speed affects OC'ing the cpu with regards to bottlenecks etc. my current FSB in bios is 333 (8x333=2666ghz) and my ram frequency is 667.

would i be right in sayin that theres not much point in me OC'ing my cpu given my current ram speed? id rather not OC the ram.

which leads me to my next question

4 - i was thinkin of buyin 4gb of corsair DD3 ram (1333mhz / latency timings 9-9-9-24) to replace my current ram. would this significantly increase my PC performance for gaming or would it allow me to get a lot more outa my cpu? is it basically worth doin this upgrade?

any help here would be great:)

long time since oc my 6750.
but there good chips to overclock

whats a safe OC for this cpu, anyone else here have one?

safe oc is when temps are good & system aint crashing :P
these chips good for anything between 3.4-3.8
with just putting the fsb to 400 will give you an oc of 3.2 to start u off,
probs need a little nudge upwards on cpu volts. your memory should also handles this ok.

Your best bet is to read the overclocking thread here, then read again :)
then you can go further

i was thinkin of buyin 4gb of corsair DD3 ram (1333mhz / latency timings 9-9-9-24)

your motherboard only uses ddr2 ram, this wont work :(

nice oc set up u have there with some tweaking should go higher :)

Gigabyte S775 Intel P35

do a search here for that mobo, loads had, have them. sure there very good to overclock :) g/l

thanks for that i will check out those guides. just checked my mobo manual and it does defo support dd3 ram.

il see if anyone else can chip in with some more answers.

ok what would u guys say is the current bottleneck in my system? considering that i can safely OC mt cpu to over 3ghz would i be better buyin faster ram or a better gpu?

the more i research i do into what faster ram does the less reasons im findin in buyin new ram.

or am i wrong about that?

I have a very similar set-up to you and have overclocked my E6750.

At default the E6750 is 333 x 8 = 2.66GHz and your Ram is 667 / 2 = 333. So if you up your FSB (333) your ram will have to be overclocked too, which you have said you don’t wont to do. So buying faster ram is an option, you can get 4GB of 1066MHz for £40. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-149-OC&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=817. As you have 2GB it may be worth upgrading to 4GB anyway. Yes your motherboard does support both DDR2 & DDR3 but I personal don’t think it’s worth going for DDR3.

1) All depends on Heat and Voltage, best to google that. I’ve got mine stable for day to day use at 3.2GHz, which is 8 x 400. This gives me a CPU & Ram ratio of 1:1. (FSB 400 & Ram 400)

2) I would advise against using any auto tune function, much better to do it yourself.

3) Your almost right, take your current FSB which is 333. Now dived your ram by 2 667MHZ / 2 = 333MHZ, which is the same as your FSB, these two are connected. You dived ram because DDR2 is double rate.

I’ve had mine running @ 3.6GHz but for day to day use I didn’t see much of a difference from 3.2GHz, plus it means that my Ram was overclocked. The best thing to do is have a good read on the internet loads of people have overclocked these. It will give you a good idea of what bios setting you will need and which programs to use for checking stability e.g.

ok i think i understand things a bit better now. ive OC'd to 3.2 and it seems stable so im happy with that.

i defo think it might be time to buy a new graphics card though.

thanks mate:)

Have you defiantly got it to 3.2GHz and stable already? Its best stress test the overclock for 8 or more hours really. Plus is your bios set to auto on the voltage? I’d recommended setting it manually going as low as you can with it still be stable.

As for the graphics card what game do you play?

i havent done a stress test yet but surely il notice any problems while gaming? games i play are

total war
hearts of iron
silent hunter
IL2
battlefield europe

and various other fps

as for voltage, yeah i have it set manually at 1.31. cpu temp is ok but that should be fine right?

one more thing bout OC'ing. i simply increased the fbs to 400 which automatically increased the mem frequency to 800.

but some guides suggest changing the PCI express frequency as well. do i need to do this as well or are the changes ive made above enough?

1.31v should be ok, from memory I think 1.5 is the max so you’re no way near that. I personally would never go above 1.35v for long periods of time to be on the safe side.

Yes it should have upped ram to 800.

Best to leave PCI express frequency for now.

A good program to use is cpu-z tells you about the speed you’re Cpu, Ram e.g. are running at.
