Core 2 Duo E8400 Vs Core 2 Quad Q6600

If your worried about the leccy bill then give them £25 each time a bill comes in.

I've offered, my mum is like, dont be stupid! as if handing her £25 dont work :o. I gonna get a quad I think, apparently the E8400's are not overclocking to 4Ghz easilly so dunno now. I'm going to post a thread for good clocking C2Q 6600 and might jump.

ive got a pa amp in my bedroom which flickers lights when its turned on, who cares about cpu power consumption.

and ftr the pa amp had added about £5 a month onto the bill on continuous use (which i dont anyway).

LOL what!!??

Looks like you've already made up your mind :)

I'd like a quad because I like the perspective of running 4x F@H + Dr. DivX + game at the same time

Dr. Divx with all quality settings at max takes a few hours on my E4300 to encode a film, so hopefully the Q6600 will manage a bit better!!

I went from a 4200+ dual core to a Q6600. Using TMPGEnc to do HD wmv's for the Xbox 360 it is about 3 times faster than the old chip was. If all people do is game then a dual core is enough but if you want to do other things then quad every time.

I was excited about the prospect of a new toy last night, but now wisdom has set in and I have decided to keep my quad like a reasonable person. I need my 3dmarks

dude. you just convinced me not to with very good reasons.

I'm pretty sure in the next few weeks we'll see some decent deals on used 8800GTS 512s/8800gtxs and stuff

I might just buy a 3870X2 in the end... But my 3.4Ghz C2D is too slow.

Your CPU is probably the part least likely to bottleneck your system atm.

ACTIVITY.....BOTTLENECK
Games.....GPU
Windows.....Hard Disk
E-mail.....Your ISP
Web.....Constraints of the Internet path
Encoding.....CPU

imho

I was faced with a new c2d or a quad path, but as i'll be rendering my backside off in 3dmax and compiling BIG maps in level design editing I went for the quad :)

Just goto ask yourself will you use it?

(who cares about power consumption im in uni halls :D !)

If you mainly game then a quad core is a complete waste of time. You will have two cores sitting there doing nothing. It's all very well people saying a quad is the sensible way to go as it will be used on all four cores soon but that was the same when duals came out and we are only just seeing some games use them. I went from my E4300 @3.4ghz to this quad and apart from benchies there is no difference at all. If you are worried about electricity use, my pc has gone from 246w at the wall to 422w. With the rip off prices we are charged in the UK for power set to increase even further that may be an issue for you. Personally i will be getting a E8500 and ditching the quad. Before Easy or anybody else jumps down my throat saying it's dearer than a quad, not from where i am getting it. In fact it's considerably cheaper than a quad. Sell my quad and should make a little bit of profit.

If the electric bill is a problem to some people then maybe they should re-enable speedstep? I play a lot of games but i still use windows/internet more so 1.2ghz or whatever would be plenty for then.

I'm tempted by the e8400 but not sure if i will notice much improvement over the bargain that is the e2180 @3.2ghz. The only cpu intensive thing i do is gaming. It's a shame the older core2 chips never seem to reduce in price once they are replaced. The e6600 is still £152!

Yup a new hardware release can always get the old credit card twitching, I too had a cheap E8400 sitting in a basket and went through the whole rationalization process before closing the browser and burying my head in the sand! :p

but now wisdom has set in and I have decided to keep my quad like a reasonable person.
Well thats an expensive chip you have there and a very capable one too, you would have needed to be really bored to swap out a Q6600 for an E8400. How long have you owned the quad btw?

I need my 3dmarks
Nothing wrong with that but its probably the most expensive game in the world.

Well I ordered my g0 on the 20th of december...and since I have my 3850 and quad in the same loop on only a HE120.2 (also using an ancient EK wave), temps are a bit high above 3.6ghz.

Now I'm considering just building another dedicated gfx loop and picking up something like an 8800GTS 512mb. Would really like a 3870x2 but I have a feeling the price is going to be a bit too much. I just can't justify spending over 200ish on a 3d card....especially when there's nothing my current 3850 won't play except for crysis

20th of december
Wow the shine wore of that chip pretty quick? couple of weeks and your bored of the G0 quad already!! I wonder how long a new E8400 would keep you happy?

Great system you have there, 3600MHz Water Cooled Quad Core, I would say that puts you in the upper 2% of best computers in the world?

And you want more! :p
